Giuseppe Gagliano, son of Bernardo Gagliano and Rosa lo Curto, is born and baptized on 3 November 1855 in Corleone. His godparents are Angelo Gagliano and Francesca, his sister, both unmarried.[1] Giuseppe is named after his paternal grandfather.
Giuseppe's mother dies in 1873 and his father remarries two years later, to Ignazia Serra.
Giuseppe marries the widow of his brother, Pietro:
Giuseppe Gagliano, son of Bernardo Gagliano and the late Rosa lo Curto, marries Pasqua Governali, daughter of the late Pasquale Governali and Epifania Governali, and widow of Pietro Gagliano, on 26 April 1908 in Corleone. First degree affinity is discovered (because Pasqua's first husband and second husband are brothers) and requires a dispensation, granted 4 April. Witnesses are Bernardo Trombaturi and Francesco Colletto. [2][3]
Giuseppe emigrates to New York City at an unknown date. He appears on a 1929 manifest as Joseph Gagliano, "friend" of Vincenzo Collura, aka "Mr. Vincent," who is returning from Havana, Cuba. Collura has given Joseph's name as both his contact in the country he has departed, and arrival contact at his destination. Joseph's New York address is 225 E 107th St. This is the same address to which Calogero Rao and his family returned three years earlier, in 1926. Giuseppe is Calogero's step-uncle, the step-brother of Rao's mother.
