Biography

Bernardo Gagliano, son of Maestro Giuseppe Gagliano, a shoemaker, and Palma di Liberto, is born on 19 April 1831 in his parents' home in Corleone.[1] His godparents are Maestro Antonino Berlingeri and Francesca Marsala, who are both unmarried.[2]

Bernardo marries twice, first to Rosa lo Curto, daughter of Maestro Pietro lo Curto and Liboria Triolo, on 29 January 1850. His father has died by this time.[3]

Bernardo and Rosa have at least two children, Giuseppe (1855) and Pietro (c. 1868).

Giuseppe is born and baptized on 3 November 1855 in Corleone. His godparents are Angelo Gagliano and Francesca, his sister, both unmarried.[4] Giuseppe is named after his paternal grandfather.

Bernardo remarries to Ignazia Serra, daughter of Vincenzo Serra and Maria Agnese Cammarata, and widow of Bernardo Colletto, on 28 November 1875.[5]

Bernardo and Ignazia have at least four children: Vincenzo (1875), Angelo (1878), Simone (1883), and Francesco (1886).

Vincenzo is born 30 November 1875 and baptized the next day. His godparents are Giuseppe Cerniglio and Angela Serra, a married couple.[6]

Angelo is born 11 April 1878 and baptized three days later. His godfather is Nicolo' Marullo, who is unmarried.[7]

Simone is born 31 March 1883 in Corleone.[8] He is baptized 1 April. His godparents are Giovanni Caviglia and Giovanna Sarzana, a married couple.[9]

Liboria marries when she is seventeen, to Antonino Rao, on 1 November 1885.[10]

On 9 November 1886, Bernardo Gagliano, age 52 (b. 1824), brickmason (murifabro), reports the birth on 8 November of a baby to Ignazia Serra, his wife, in their home in via Misericordia, #23, Corleone. The baby is a boy and is named Francesco Gagliano.[11]

Francesco is baptized the day after his birth. His godparents are Domenico Serra and his sister, Vincenza, both unmarried.[12]

Pietro, a stone mason (murifabbro), marries Pasqua Governali on 17 November 1894 in Corleone. Pietro is 26 (b. 1868) and Pasqua is 25.[13]

Vincenzo, a falegname (carpenter), marries for the first time at the age of 18 to Marianna Ortoleva, civile (landowner), in November 1894 in Corleone.[14]

In the 1905 New York state census, Ignazia lives with her sons in New York City.

Francesco is 20 (b. 1886) when he marries Rosina Colletti, 18 (b. 1888), on 5 April 1906 in Manhattan.[15]

Giuseppe marries Pasqua Governali, his brother, Pietro's widow, on 26 April 1908 in Corleone.
