Researchers Note: This profile is Under Construction- although refinements have been made, research and linking across profiles is continuing. Please do not tinker with information here while this process continues.

Research Note - Caution - Online Sources such as Ancestry, Family Search, and others need careful vetting as information may not be correct - reason for this is mixing name Sarah with Sally and other details .

Please read the section headed Preliminary Research Note before making any changes to this profile.

Research Note: The information on this profile has been grouped under sub-headings as follows:

  1. Area 1 Intermingling of sisters Sally and Sarah Details Caused Confusion
  2. Area 2 Background to the confusion- related to the books titled The Descendants of Andrew Ford of Weymouth Massachusetts Volumes 1,2, and 3. and to the book titled Edson......

Research Note:- Read all the sections below before reading about SALLY, Phillip, and their children

Area 1 Intermingling of sisters Sally and Sarah Details Caused Confusion

Over a period of time, researchers investigating 2 of the daughters of Joseph and Freelove Beals Ford, namely Sally and Sarah Ford-10406, have intermingled their birth, marriage, death, and other information creating issues, especially for researchers wanting to claim connections to organizations that require detailed evidence of correct ancestry.

Perhaps, because of the intermingling, researchers on various sites may have started using the name Sarah Sally for one or both individuals. For this reason, any researcher coming to this profile must understand that many researchers, including those who are direct line descendants, have expended a great deal of effort and time to sort out who was SALLY? who was SARAH? and why there was no person called Sarah Sally.

One reason the problems with Sally and Sarah Ford-10406 became an issue may have been related to the information in 2 of the volumes of the book titled The Descendants of Andrew Ford of Weymouth Massachusetts by ELIZABETH COBB STEWART. [1]

Area 2 Background to the confusion- related to the books titled The Descendants of Andrew Ford of Weymouth Massachusetts Volumes 1,2, and 3. and also to the book titled Edson family history and genealogy : descendants of Samuel Edson of Salem and Bridgewater, Mass.

Note: Volume one is online; Volume 2 and 3 are not - so getting access to the necessary pages in Volume 2 and 3 can be difficult. Also, unless otherwise noted, all the information copied below is from an analysis of Stewart's books or an excerpt of the text.

Comparing Volumes

To see comparison information - refer to the attached document labelled Analysis of how Sally Ford Hodges and her sister Sarah Ford Edson evolved through revisions to become Sarah Sally

1969 Edition Volume 1 Details

  1. In Volume 1 on page 1 Stewart, explains her role as compiler and also mentions the many sources and contributors to the book. One contributor Stewart described was Florence Harlow Barclay of Whitman, Mass. noting that she contributed much to the first 2 generations. Mrs Barclay's name is mentioned within the text referring to the Family papers of the late R. Z. Hopkins & Diaries of Duane Dorr Hodges that connection will be explained later.
  2. In Volume 1 on Pages 59 and 60 under Joseph Hodge ID Number 30, Stewart (the compiler) lists Joseph's ancestors, names his wife, Freelove Beals, and lists his children.

Key points about the children listed in Joseph's biography

  1. Joseph's sons are clearly identified.
  2. However the daughters are listed as un-named daughter born about 1773, Sally ID number VI born 1777, and another un-named daughter born 1781.
  3. Stewarts's details about Sally ID number VI are comprehensive, covering her birth, marriage to Phillipp Hodge, their children and Phillip and Sally's deaths.
  4. Stewart makes no suggestion about the names of the daughters born in 1773 and 1781.

1988 Edition Volume 2 & 3

- Stewart (the complier) makes numerous corrections in The eighth, ninth and later generations; additions and corrections for parts [vol.] 1 and 2.

Corrections specific to Sarah and Sally

  1. One of the corrections that Stewart makes is to swap Sally ID number VI with that of Sarah who is now Sarah ID number VI.
  2. Stewart doesn't refer to the birth year dates originally assigned to Sally, instead she refers to the 12 Sep 1799 Baptism Record as proof that Sarah was the daughter of Joseph and Freelove Beals Ford.
  3. Stewart also provides details about Sarah's marriage to Isaac Edson, their divorce and their children.
  4. Therefore, because of the changes of name and details, it was highly likely that Sally and Sarah became inter-mingled and that this intermingled information was (and still is) spread throughout the many genealogy sites.

Another Problem Book

  1. In 1969, Carroll Andrew Edson published 2 Volumes of his book titled Edson family history and genealogy : descendants of Samuel Edson of Salem and Bridgewater, Mass. [2]
  2. Edson's biographical text about Issac Edson (husband of Sarah) in Volume 2, Chapter 25, Pages 641 Heading John 5 Edson Fifth Generation ID Number 202 and Page 642 Heading Sixth Generation Isaac 202-1. may have also contributed to the confusion because Edson listed Sarah's parents as Samuel and Sarah Dyer Ford.
  3. Unfortunately, Edson did not publish a third volume (that he hoped to do) in which he may have corrected his parent error by naming Sarah's correct parents as Joseph and Freelove Beals Ford based on baptism records.

To learn more about Carroll Andrew Edson Edson-1433, follow the link to his profile where Carroll Andrew Edson's lineage is described, his research into the Edsons is covered in detail, and his sources are listed and how his research through the Edson ancestry possibly resulted in his naming the wrong parents- Samuel and Sarah Dyer Ford - as parents of Sarah Ford Edson.

Area 3 So Who WAS The Original SALLY and what EVIDENCE do we have?

To answer the above questions. excerpts have been copied below and are found in the book [3]

Note: Sub-headings, spacing, and notes will be used to improve readability.

Area 4 SPECIAL MENTION: RESEARCHERS AND DOCUMENTS

Background Information in Volume 1 of the book The Descendants of Andrew Ford.... by Stewart

  1. Preface- Most of the material in this book was originally published by the New England Historic Genealogical Society in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Volume CXIX, January, 1965, through Volume CXX, January, 1966.
  2. The compiler acknowledges her indebtedness to the many members of the family and to friends who have contributed to the genealogy; also to those unknown benefactors whose respect for history caused them to gather and preserve the numerous records used in composing this book.
  3. Page 1- There is no genealogy of the entire family, but material on it has been presented in several genealogies (see text for lists of genealogies as well as in text citations throughout the book.

RESEARCHERS connected to the Andrew Ford history and books

  1. Elizabeth Cobb Stewart - compiler
  2. Florence H. Barclay) - Mrs Barclay was a noted genealogist

Questions related to the above researchers:

  1. What triggered the change in text from Sally ID number VI born 1777 and married to Phillip Hodges to Sarah ID number VI baptized 12 Sep 1779 and first married to Isaac Edson?
  2. Are there any records that would give a clear indication of why the text was changed? Has anyone tried looking for it- possibly through correspondence related to the various editions?
  3. In the revised text, after writing about Sarah, the authors included notes mentioning Sally - and therefore are writing about 2 different individuals - not a person called "Sarah Sally". Refer to the attached Image labelled Analysis of how Sally Ford Hodges and her sister Sarah Ford Edson evolved through revisions to become Sarah Sally

RESEARCHERS connected to the Hodges Family

  1. Duane Door Hodges Hodges-11920- Sally and Phillip's grandson via their son Warren Babbit - see his profile for more details
  2. R. Z. Hopkins (aka Richard Zubil Hopkins) Hopkins-21228- great great great grandson of Sally and Phillip via their son Wayne, his son Duane, his daughter Ada.
  3. Mr Richard L Ashmun - Hodges Descendant - see Letters below and attached as an Image to this profile

Summary of the 4 letters

The senders were:

  1. Mr Richard L Ashmun - descended from
  2. Mrs Goldsmith Cummington Historical Society
  1. Nov 1996 (Bottom Left Green Paper) - Mr Asmun writes to Mrs Goldsmith seeking birth information on Sally Ford
  2. Feb 13- 1997 (Bottom Right Pink Paper)_Mrs Goldsmith replies - and her replies are vital as they explain that there are no records for Sally and the reason is that the records were not kept at that time. She also provides information that Joseph Ford had moved
  3. May 1997 (Top Left Pink Paper)- Mr Ashmun writes seeking information for Sarah, Jacob, Molly, and Anna and the records about Joseph Ford moving from Abington to Cummington
  4. June 1997 (Top Right Pink Paper) Mrs Goldsmith confirms records sent .

Conclusion: Unlike some of her siblings whose births/baptisms were recorded in the Cummington records, family researchers, in particular Richard L Asmun of Pleasant Hill, Pennsylvania obtained evidence that no record was available for the period when she -SALLY- was born -

How was Richard L Ashmun connected to the Hodges?

Richard was a direct line descendant of Sally and Phillip through their daughter Lorena Ford Morley whose daughter Nancy married into the Ashman (aka ASHMUN) family.

Note Mr. Ashmun was a Life Member of American Legion Post # 446, VFW Post # 3360, the Slovak-American Sportsman Club of Hecla, Moose Lodge # 1151, Greensburg and the Pennsylvania Mayflower Society. Mr. Ashmun was also a Life member of the National Society, PA Society and the General Arthur St. Clair Chapter, Greensburg, National Sons of the American Revolution,. He held various positions in the organization including National Vice President, General for the Mid Atlantic District, National Trustee, National Vice Chairman of the ROTC/JROTC Committee, PA State President and PA State Genealogist & Chapter President, and served on many other committees. DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Sally by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Sally:

Not finished --- working on refinements and checking images and sources, etc - will advise when done.....
Not finished -- the detour research of Carroll Andrew Edson has been undertaken with the goal of trying to understand why and how he wrote a very important Edson genealogy book published in 1969. It is planned to provide his family ancestry commencing with Deacon Solomon and how it diverged from the ancestry of Issac Edson, Sarah Ford Edson, and her sister Sally Ford Hodge. .
Some minor revisions taking place as I compare text for Sally and her sister Sarah. - so not finished yet!
Mostly finished - now to do Sarah - Sally's sister -so will leave Under Construction until I work through Sarah, Her husband and children.
Drafting more comprehensive - this will be the basic plan for Sarah - but of course changing names .
Still not done -- slow progress - have been working on her husband and children and looking at her grandchildren -- most important that any information linking to Sarah instead of Sally needs to be corrected -- there is probably several more weeks of work.
Not done--- will be slow as I also will be looking at husband and children ---- and also parents and siblings --- be back later -

I am going to start putting some info into this profile -- as per my usual method- info may be dumped here and NOT edited while I also do research and jump back and forth to family members. Process will be slow- (some busy days here) . Please do not tinker with this profile- put any comments here or email.
Ford-24910 and Ford-12956 appear to represent the same person because: Please see personal email for merger plan - It explains a lot and has images and table about what I have done
This profile has had some major changes to make it easier to do the planned merger. Please do not tinker with it- see your email for detailed plan of merger.

And Cleve Willis are Ford/Edson's.. Sarah Ford Edson's line. Hopefully the Hodges line can find a Secondary Document to Prove Sally Ford Hodges to Joseph and Freelove. I believe She was born named Sally.. They.. Joseph and Freelove did not tack on any Nicknames. As we can see by the Cooke Application the Sarah has been added with "Sally"..

The Hodges Bible Shows Sally????

Sarah Ford Edson and Sally Ford Hodges information have been intermingled for some time. Micheal Willis ( Edson Line) and I ( Hodges line) have been trying to sort this out. Originally Researcher Elizabeth Cobb Stewart in her Book “The Descendants of Andrew Ford of Weymouth “ . Had our Sally Ford Hodges as the daughter of Joseph and Freelove Beal Ford. In a Revised addition of her research she changed the Daughter to Sarah Ford Edson. We know from the childrens birth of Sarah Edson and Sally Ford Hodges , they are not the same person. We also know The birthday and death day associated with both Sarah Ford Edson and Sally Ford Hodges , is actually our Sally Ford Hodges Birth and death dates, Documented in the Hodges Bible ( copyright 1800- belonging to one of Phillip and Sally Hodges son’s and passed on to Hodges Family .( Bible donated to the NEHGS by Laurie Gilman . ). Sally Ford Hodges Birthday was 18 Sept 1777 She died 1846 Aug 4 . We are not sure where either Sarah Ford Edson or Sally Ford Hodges are Buried. From what I understand…Elizabeth Cobb Stewart based her changing Sarah Edson as the daughter of Joseph and Freelove Ford on the Fact the Fords lived closer to the Edson Family . However Joseph And Freelove Fords son Nehemiah Ford was a witness to a property sale from Phillip Hodges Father ( Isaac Hodges) to one of his sons ( Hezekiah Hodges -Franklin Delaware County NY 1799 July 1) . So, Both Hodges and Edson lived close or were in contact with Joseph and Freelove Fords family! Up to this point very little is found about either Sarah or Sally. There is documentation that Sarah Ford Had a sister Molly and both girls (Sarah and Molly) were christened 1779 Sept 12. Our Sally Would be turning 2 Sept 18- did they christen her on the Sun before her 2 birthday? , a possible hint??

In some family trees , I have seen our Sally Ford Hodges nick name as “Molly” ? I am still researching Molly, there is little info about her. Another Hint in the Hodges tree is Sally Ford Hodges and Phillip Hodges named a son Nathaniel Ford Hodges. There are several Nathaniel Fords in the Andrew Ford Weymouth line!??? (hint?? ) FYI, I do share DNA with an Edson family member and a Moses Ford Family member ( Moses Ford is another brother of Sarah Ford and son of Joseph and Freelove Ford). I do believe the 2 women, (Sarah and Sally ) are related, possibly sisters, cousins? If anyone has any new information, both Micheal Willis and are are very interested in learning more , we are continually researching both, and hope someday new information will appear, or DNA may solve it???

I'm researching the Beal family and connected Fords. I'd like to help sort this out, but there are some basic things missing from this page and Isaac's page. What is the reason to connect Phillip to the family of Isaac and his son Hezekiah? I see that Isaac and Freelove of Franklin, NY, deeded property to Hezekiah in a way that infers he was their son, but on Isaac's page there is no Hezekiah as a son, and Isaac is first married to "Mary Freelove (Babbitt)," with no supporting marriage information. Then we have Mary Freelove's parents attached and she's in a list of children as Mary Freelove, but her birth record calls her only Mary. Also, Isaac's page doesn't mention a son Hezekiah. Is Phillip's connection to Isaac and Hezekiah a guess? Do we know the origin of Isaac and Freelove? Who they actually are? I don't see any evidence to confuse Sarah (Ford) Edson with Sarah (Ford) Hodges other than their circa birth dates. Without any primary source for the information on these pages, it's hard to make sense of why this confusion exists.

Thank you for your comments and research! Unfortunately there isn’t a lot of documentation we have found yet! There is an active Hodges group working on Isaac and hopefully they will find documentation . There are several actively working on this, and one is a professional genealogist and is from the Ford Hodges line! So I am hoping their research will provide answers . We do think Mary Freelove Babbitt was married to our Isaac Hodges because their son Phillip and Sally Ford Hodges named a son Warren Babbitt Hodges after the brother of Mary Freelove Babbitt???

My Wiki tree is incomplete compared to my ancestry.com tree… I’ll try to update the wiki tree . Are you in touch with Micheal Willis? He is actively researching the Edson side. We do think the 2 Sarah’s may be related … I thought one of them could be Molly the other Sarah! That’s why I strongly believe that Mary Polly Ford Mason who was born in 1777 Dighton Mass and married in Diaghton Bristol Mass 1796? Is not Joseph and freelove daughter Molly and should be removed! I would be happy to share any and all information I have and would be interested in any you have! Pat

Reading your note again, the confusion about the 2 Sarah’s started with Elizabeth Cobb Stewart’s Work “ Descendants of Andrew Ford of a Weymouth Mass. “ Her original work had Sarah Ford Hodges as the daughter of Freelove and Joseph Ford, and Sarah Ford Edson as the daughter of Samuel Ford. In an update she changed the daughter of Joseph and Freelove Ford to Sarah Ford Edson . As Micheal Willis stated, there is no documentation to prove either. I agree, There is a very strong connection with Sarah Ford Edson and the Ford family. Supposedly Elizabeth’s original work used Diary and notes from Hodges descendants? I still am searching for these. The research the Hodges group is doing is working on sorting all the questions you mentioned about Isaac Hodges, but it is believed at this time, he is the Father of Phillip and Hezekiah ? I’ll try and update my wiki tree with more documentation.
