Biography

Calogera Colletto is born in her parents' home on via San Giovanni in Corleone on 23 August 1842. She is the daughter of Filippo Colletto, a farmer, and Paola Ferraro.[1] Her godparents are Vincenzo di Palermo and Oliva Ligotino, a married couple.[2]

A nephew of Calogera's godparents, Andrea Marino, marries Francesca Castro in 1871. Calogera's brother later marries a sister of Francesca's.

Calogera marries Giuseppe Vutera, son of Vincenzo Vutera and the late Maria di Miceli, on 11 October 1868 in Corleone. This record calls her late mother "Liboria."[3]

Calogera and Giuseppe have at least two children, Vincenzo (1869) and Giovanni (c. 1880).

Vincenzo is born and baptized on 19 December 1869 in Corleone. HIs godparents are Giovanni Cusimano and Giovanna Marino, a married couple.[4]

Giovanni is born around 1880, based on his age at emigration.

Vincenzo emigrates to New Orleans in 1893.

Calogera emigrates in 1894 on the Kronprinz Friedrich Wilhelm, sailing from Palermo via Naples and arriving on 17 October 1894 in Ellis Island, in New York. She is among a large group of passengers identified by this researcher as being from Corleone. Cascio-10 15:15, 20 December 2018 (UTC) All are going on to the port of New Orleans. A partial list follows:

Calogera is not closely related to the families named nearest hers, but a common denominator among several of her companions is the Castro sisters mentioned above. Michele Parrino is married to another Castro sister, Antonina. Maria Morello is a third cousin of the Castro sisters. Calogera and Angelo Terrusa are distantly related by marriage through the same Castro family. Cascio-10 15:52, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

Giovanni Vutera's identity has not yet been established. His baptismal record does not appear in the records for Corleone around 1880. Cascio-10 15:15, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

Calogera’s brother, Mariano, is a dangerous livestock thief, labor agitator, and capo in the Fratuzzi, the Mafia in Corleone. In 1898, Mariano marries Caterina Castro.

Mariano is killed in Corleone in 1904.

Vincenzo marries Vincenza Macaluso on 28 June 1906 in Corleone. This couple obtains dispensation to wed, required due to third degree consanguinity. His father has died.[6]
