Shared Photo: DAR ceremony

This photo was taken at a DAR ceremony honoring Revolutionary War Patriot William Berryhill. My Aunt Frankie joined the DAR by descent from this man, and her chapter finally got around to having a ceremony. I was included as a seventh generation descendant of William and because I was a Boy Scout. I got to uncover the plaque and read the inscription as my part of the ceremony. How proud I was!!

One problem: This William was many years later proven to be a first cousin of our actual ancestor, also named William!! Aunt Frankie and my grandmother, her sister, neither of whom are in this photo, would have had heart attacks if they had found out. Location: Steele Creek Cemetery, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Date: 30 May 1971. Wasn't I a handsome fella at 13 years old?

Oh, you're adorable! That lady's outfit...I think I had something similar. LOL.
This is great! I love the outfits. I wish we still dressed this way.
Agreed! My mom still has knockout clothes church. Age 92 and dresses to the nines. Wouldn’t think of not going all dolled up, not like these days where you can wear a bathing suit, tank top, and flip-flops!
Good for your mother Pip. Good for her. I wish her the best in health and family. You have a beautiful mother and Aunt.

Wonderful photo, Pip. I remember the white gloves and teased hair, although I was of course very, very young at the time.smiley

When I found this photo, I kept looking to see if someone was standing behind the lady in the right to see if that was where all 5e hair was coming from. Nope, it’s all hers.

I remember my grandmother always went to church with gloves. Would have just DIED if she forgot them!
LOL. And a hat, too, of course!
Absolutely!!!
White gloves and hats are required for DAR sisters at a Sister's funeral.... as we were so kindly reminded recently when a Sister passed.
Don't forget your long single-stand pearls.
Great picture, I understand the pride of finding a American Revolutionary War ancestor and the reverence in being a part of a ceremony in their honor.
Thanks, Bob!

How did I miss this after a month or so? It finally popped up in my g2g feed.

Lookin' good, man. Great photo! So...did you join the Sons of the American Revolution?

I know I can. One of my dad's patients keeps asking my mom and I if we want to join the SAR/DAR.

Nah, I never joined. I put in an online request and was told I’d be contacted, but never heard anything. I didn’t follow up.
That's unfortunate. =( Maybe you can get in by proxy? Just a thought. I just wanna see you with one of those muskets. =)

Chris, don't feel bad - I missed it also. What a great picture, Pip. I have never been to a DAR ceremony. It would be interesting to attend one.

Pip, your mother and my mother sound so much alike. My mom is 86, looks like 70 and has a wardrobe to die for. If she is dressed in sweats, she apologizes.

You never see her out when she is not dressed up, hair done perfectly and make-up done like a professional has visited her house before she left.

Your grandmother and Aunt Frankie look terrific, (white gloves included) and you are not a bad looking boy scout. Love the way you are casually leaning on the headstone.

Thanks for sharing with your WikiTree family.

God Bless.

What musket?   I have been considering applying for SAR for my two sons.   One is a historian (and collects old firearms representative of all our conflicts.).  A replica of a musket would thrill his heart.   It would be more reason to apply for him as a surprise.

Please elaborate.

Thank you!

Paula
