May 10-Until we finish

USBH sprint icon: running manGoal: 2024 is the year of completion for USBH. We want to finish all the old creation sprints that we've started. Choose a spreadsheet and go for it! These are in order of which ones we want finished first.

Sprint #1 Cemetery Creation Sprint (Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia)

Sprint #2 5th USCI Soldiers

Sprint #3 1880 Western States (California, Dakotas, Montana, New Mexico remaining)

Sprint #4 6888th/Tuskegee Airmen

Sprint #5 Freedman's Cemetery, Alexandria, Virginia

Instructions Goal#1:

  • Post an answer below and tell us you will be participating.
  • Go to the Google spreadsheet of your choice and put your Wiki-ID next to the first person you will create a profile for. Notice some spreadsheets have more than one tab.
  • Use the linked sources on the spreadsheet to create a profile for each person. Use the information from these sources to search for additional genealogical records for them (census, marriage, etc.). More sources means better information!
  • All profiles of African Americans should get the {{African-American Sticker}}. Each soldier should also get a military sticker. If you don't know how to add a military sticker, please use the category [[US Black Heritage Project, Needs Military Sticker]].
  • Adding family member profiles is a great bonus!
  • Please add any appropriate USBH project maintenance categories so that other project members can continue improving the profiles after this weekend.
  • Add the new Wiki-ID for their profile in the Wiki-ID column.
  • Repeat!

Well, shoot, the links go to Ancestry.com.  This will take a bit longer; I'll need to find the familysearch equivalent.
Thanks, Jillaine!

The 1880 census is free on Ancestry.

Okay, I did not get far at all, but I did unearth a little nugget of history.  I kept wondering why I was finding so many African Americans in the now tiny town of Grass Valley in Nevada Co., California.  I had to google it...

Turns out that during California's Gold rush, enslavers would bring their enslaved persons out from the east to help with the gold rush-- in various capacities. So that means they were likely there prior to the Civil War, and became free there.

Most of them were gone by 1900, having moved to the larger California cities. See https://nevadacountyhistory.org/african-american-pioneers/
