Welcome to the US Black Heritage Project's Weekend Sprint!
Our sprints are open to all WikiTreers.
Come join the fun!
November 10-November 12
Goal#1: Create all the profiles for the 6888 Postal Battalion and the Tuskegee Airmen who served during WWII.
Goal#2 Add military stickers to profiles from the category: "Needs Military Sticker."
Introduction
The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, known as "The Six-Triple Eight," was an all-Black, all-female United States Army battalion that served in Europe during World War II. It consisted of 824 enlisted personnel and 31 officers drawn from the Women's Army Corps, the Army Service Forces, and the Army Air Forces. The servicewomen were stationed primarily in Birmingham, England and Rouen, France, where they processed undelivered mail for the United States military.
The Tuskegee Airmen, comprised of the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group, were the first African American military pilots in the US Armed Forces. In 1939, Congress passed a law that designated funds to train African American pilots. However, the bar for admission to the program was set very high. According to Coleman Young, who would later be elected the first African American Mayor of Detroit: "They made the standards so high, we actually became an elite group. We were screened and super-screened. We were unquestionably the brightest and most physically fit young blacks in the country. We were super-better because of the irrational laws of Jim Crow."
Instructions Goal#1:
- Post an answer below and tell us you will be participating.
- Go to the Google spreadsheet and put your Wiki-ID next to the first person you will create a profile for. Note: there is a tab for 6888 and a tab for the Airmen.
- Use the linked sources from the spreadsheet to create a profile for each person. Use the information from these sources to search for additional genealogical records for them (census, marriage, etc.). More sources means better information!
- All profiles of African Americans should get the {{African-American Sticker}}. Each person should also get a military sticker. If you don't know how to add a military sticker, please use the category [[US Black Heritage Project, Needs Military Sticker]].
- Adding family member profiles is a great bonus!
- Please add any appropriate USBH project maintenance categories so that other project members can continue improving the profiles after this weekend.
- Add the new Wiki-ID for their profile in the Wiki-ID column.
- Repeat!
Instructions Goal#2:
- Go to the category: "Needs Military Sticker."
- Some profiles will already have an adequate military source, others you will need to find one.
- Add the sticker with the appropriate fields completed.
- Remove the Needs Military Sticker category.
- Save your work.
- Repeat
Before: Goal#1 1480 profiles needed (716 6888/764 Airmen) Goal#2 737 stickers needed
After:
Thank you for helping us to honor these amazing people who served our country during WWII.
