Welcome to US Black Heritage Project's Weekend Sprint!

This was such a great sprint last year, we're going to do it again.

Who can pitch in? Everyone!

How much do you have to do? As little or as much as you can. It all adds up.

the weekend is over. Thank you for the help!

Goal #1: To work together as a project to add as many birth locations as we can in 3 days to profiles with the African-American sticker. This will help us to prevent duplicates and to run more complete location reports.

Goal#2 To add family members to our lonely single profiles.

Instructions Goal #1:

  • Post an answer below and tell us which of the 76 pages on the report  you will be working on. Each page has 100 profiles. (to get to your page on the report, change the last number in the URL to your page. It starts on page 0) This will help us prevent tripping over each other.
  • Use sources to find the birth location. If the profile has no sources, find and add some. (Hint: US Census records are an easy way to find birth locations)
  • If you cannot find at least the state of birth, make a best estimate based on sources, mark the location as uncertain, and add a research note.

Pages 1, 3, 9, 13, 16, 24, 29, 50, 53, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76 have been claimed.

Instructions Goal #2:

  • Go to the category called Family Tree Size One and choose a person to add family to. If it's a yellow locked notable, please skip that person unless you are on the USBH Notables Team.
  • Research that person and add as many family members as you'd like to. Please don't forget sources! And you can add maintenance categories for others to continue working on the profiles.
  • Remove the Family Tree Size One category from the profile.

Thank you for helping us bring family home for the holidays and improve our profiles!

Goal #1 Before: 7510 profiles missing birth locations

After: 7371 (As of Dec 14th. Will check again next week since Sunday's work isn't counted in this number)

Goal #2 Before: 1739 profiles needing Family added

After: 1651 (88 profiles now have family!)

I'll start on page 29 of the locations report since it's my favorite number. I'll also be adding family for the tree size ones.

I'll help. I'd like to start with Unnamed Infant Butler, whose profile is managed by you, Emma, unless you want to do that one.
by Sarah Turner G2G6 (8.5k points)
If I manage a profile and it doesn't have a birth location, it probably means I adopted it at some point and haven't been able to find the birth location. If you find it, that would be amazing! Thanks for the help!
Oh, I see you mean tree size one. I have the mother named in that profile, but I think I had been unable at the time to figure out who she was.
I was thinking of her for the family size one list. I'll do my best!
Okay, I wasn't able to figure that one out. I will move on to Ella Cary, an orphaned profile.

I'm in. I'll start on page 1.
by Gina Jarvi G2G6 Pilot (147k points)
Thanks, Gina!
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Pierre-August-2 cannot be corrected as it is orphaned, has no sources or birth date/location and is likely a living profile.
Thanks, Gina. I've sent that on to the Team for deletion.

I'm going to start with a few living notables in the Tree Size One category. I'll also work on some missing birth locations from page 13 at some point this weekend.

Awesome. Thanks, Christy!

I've been tempted to try one of these sprints, but I'm likely to manage only a couple hours of work. If I sign up and do that, am I somehow interfering with the process or keeping someone else from working? If not, I'll work on page 72. I actually already did the first one on that page, Bennett-40982, just to get an idea what's involved. And if someone would check what I did to make sure it's acceptable, I would appreciate it.
by Rudy Ramsey G2G3 (3.3k points)
Hi Rudy, there's always plenty of work to go around, so going at a slower pace won't interfere with anyone's work. Your first profile looks great. You could also add the "US Black Heritage, Needs Sources" category to it so someone could come along later to add more sources. Thanks!
Thanks, Emma.

My personal life workload is comically insane right now, but I'll try to help out. This is SUCH a great sprint and I remember from last year how rewarding it is to do.

It's a crazy busy time of the year! Any help is great. Thanks!

How does one claim a page?
by Suzanne Lowe G2G5 (5.5k points)
Just pick a page number and reply here saying you'll work on it. It looks like 1, 3, 9, 13, 16, 24, 29, 50, 53, 72-76 have already been claimed, so just pick any other number below 76.

I'll work on pg. 24. (My birthday is December 24, so I figured it was a fitting number to choose!) smiley Lots going on this weekend, but I'll do as much as I can. Thanks!

Thanks for the help, May.
