57th Ohio Infantry, Company G, added to WikiTree

For the last year or so, I have been slowly working on adding WikiTree profiles for members of the 57th Ohio Infantry Regiment. Today I completed adding profiles for all members of Company G (one of the companies from my home, Hancock County, in Ohio).

I have done my best to connect every soldier in the company, but have so far failed to connect 18 of the 114 men who served in the company.

I have also attempted to be thorough on every profile, adding as much information as I can find. For some men this was quite a bit, and for others not so much.

Some highlights are:

  • Captain James A. Wilson - The company commander, James A. Wilson assisted in recruiting the company and served throughout the war. He was captured and held as a prisoner of war.
  • Captain Edwin A. Gordon - He was on picket duty prior to the Battle of Shiloh, and recalled seeing hundreds of campfires prior to the battle. He was later wounded at the Battle of Atlanta.
  • Captain Jacob Ruffner Tussing - He told some amusing anecdotes about the Siege of Vicksburg. Also, he is my good friend's 3x great uncle.
  • 1st Sergeant Hiram McDowell - He deserted from the regiment. He was later a doctor and member of the Indiana Legislature. He was later charged for sending obscene matter through the mail to his mistress.
  • Sergeant Daniel Showalter - Killed during a charge at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain.
  • Sergeant Nathaniel Blake - Wounded so often that his commanding officer wrote, "Corporal Nathaniel Blake got his usual dose and was carried off the field..."
  • Sergeant John Schneider - He survived the war, only to be killed in an accident after falling from a ladder.
  • Corporal John Sager - Killed during a charge at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain.
  • Corporal Jacob A. Nonnamaker - It appears to have been his primary duty to carry his wounded commander from the battlefield, doing so at both Vicksburg and Kennesaw Mountain.
  • Private Edward Glessner - Killed during a charge at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain.
  • Private Augustus Reiter - He was shot through both thighs at the Battle of Resaca. He survived the war, living until 1926.
  • Private Peter Snider - He was shot at the Battle of Resaca, but handled it well, firing another shot before walking to the field hospital under his own power.
  • Private John Welkly - He was captured at the Battle of Atlanta, and held prisoner at Andersonville for two months.

As I move on to other companies, I would love some help! Visit the 57th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Project or send me a message if you're interested.

Thanks.

Thanks so much for your work for this, Matt.
Awesome project.  I’m working the 105th OVI myself now for over 10 years.  846 soldiers researched of the 1099 who served researched in detail.  So I fully appreciate your effort!  If I come across any 57th Ohio info, I will gladly send it your way.
An absolutely awesome project and effort. Thank you!
Hi Matt thank you for the research you've done on these Ohio soldiers. If it's alright with you I'd like to include your space page on the main Civil War Project page with the other space pages.  Thank you.
Yes, Pam, that's alright with me.

Thanks.

Hi Matt,

Thank you for sharing this post in g2g!

This takes a lot of time and dedication (sometimes years) as I know all too well as I added every veteran of the 106th New York Infantry Regiment! They are still being connected and probably will be years later!

I believe very few of us have started these kind of side projects in the free space pages but they are absolutely invaluable. I encourage Wikitreers to join in and collaborate on the connecting…

Let’s get these veterans connected! laugh

Wonderful job Matt yes

Well done Matt!  I am doing the same for the 103rd OVI

I am lucky that the 103rd has been holding annual reunions since 1866 and have property and a museum.

I really like that you added pages for manuscripts, Official Records and especially the Roll of Honor.

Keep up the good work and I'll keep an eye out for the 57th OVI as I do research on the 103rd.
