The United States Project and its sub-projects cover the geographic region that we know today as the United States of America. See the United States Project page for information on our scope of activity, our sub-projects, and some related projects.

If you would like to help improve profiles in one or more of the United States sub-projects, please:

  1. Introduce yourself by answering this post. (Please post an answer, not a comment.) Tell us about your interests in the United States and how you intend to contribute and we will award you the United States Project badge.
  2. Add united_states to your followed tags, as well as tags for any specific states or special topics that you are focusing on.

Please be sure to check out our project page for links to the various sub-projects that you might want to join.

The following specialized US-related projects have their own membership badge, separate from this one. You don't need to join the United States Project to participate in these projects.  You should contact those projects to join them.  Many of us work on profiles that encompass many areas/interests and may want to be in more than one project.

I was born and raised in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania.  Fayette Co., was the home of my father Joseph John Bush.

My mother's family was from Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania.  My maternal family consists of Snyder, Hemminger, Messenger, Burchell, Markle, Stout and the Ruffner families.

Most of my family never left Pennsylvania. I am one of the few who did, as I now live in South Carolina.

Jo, I have awarded you the United States badge.  Please check out the Pennsylvania Project page to see if you can help them with anything.

My name is Carrol Fish.  I would like to join this project.  I am the manager of the Duncan Ancestors DNA Project and am currently working on adding and updating Duncans born or lived in Kentucky and Virginia born before 1850.  I have started with these counties, but plan on working through the US as I get each county and state completed.

My Walker line goes to 1147.  There has been a military Walker in every line even into modern times. Col. John Rutherford Walker fought with George Washington, Rufus Walker fought in the Civil War. John's sons also fought and the sons of Rufus did also. My Walker grandmother married a Trout and had 3 sons who fought WWII. Uncle J.K. Trout fought WWII, Korea, and Viet Nam. So is that enough  to join??

Please add me to the United States Project. I am a direct descendant of: a couple of the earliest settlers/survivors of Jamestown plus several Mayflower passengers, most notably William Bradford; (in)famous colonizers such as Rev. Robert Fordham and John Carman; an infamous pirate—Jean Lafitte and his Caddo mistress Marie; several presidents; ancestors on every side of Indian wars, Revolutionary War and Civil War; people who were conductors or whose homes were waystations along the Underground Railroad; a grandmother who walked the Trail of Tears and lived in a fort where Renegade Apaches often tossed spoils of hunts as well as crops over the fortress walls to the many people held captive there; pioneers who followed the Oregon Trail, or who were part of the land grabbers known as the “Sooners”; some (whom I have known personally) drove horses and cattle along the Chisholm Trail; my mom’s family survived the Dust Bowl and Great Depression (while my grandfather and great-grandfather were riding the Chisholm Trail, my grandmother, mother and sometimes my uncle—when he stayed home from riding the trail, especially during the Dust Bowl—managed to raise many vegetables, turkeys, chickens, beeves and dairy cows in spite of the harsh conditions, thereby providing for the tables of neighbors and less fortunate family members as well as themselves); my grandfather fought in France during WWI, and my dad and uncle fought overseas in WWII, while my mom and grandparents built airplanes (Mom was nearly riveted into the wing of a plane, and my grandfather was a supervisor for fitting out the Enola Gay to carry the atomic bomb). I had horrible history teachers who only taught dates and events, but nothing about people, so I had no interest in history until I met my husband—fortunately in time for me to come to a new respect and understanding of the many rich and important family stories I so loved. Weirdly, these were “just family stories” completely divorced from the background history before my sweet husband taught me the profound heritage of my extended family. I am now very interested in history, especially in US history. I’d also like to join state history for Oklahoma, Oregon, and Hawaii.
