The United States Project and its sub-projects cover the geographic region that we know today as the United States of America. See the United States Project page for information on our scope of activity, our sub-projects, and some related projects.

If you would like to help improve profiles in one or more of the United States sub-projects, please:

  1. Introduce yourself by answering this post. (Please post an answer, not a comment.) Tell us about your interests in the United States and how you intend to contribute and we will award you the United States Project badge.
  2. Add united_states to your followed tags, as well as tags for any specific states or special topics that you are focusing on.

Please be sure to check out our project page for links to the various sub-projects you might want to join. Note that several other specialized U.S.-related projects, such as US Southern ColoniesMayflowerPuritan Great MigrationUS Presidents, and the 1776 Project, have their own badges separate from this one. You don't need to join the United States Project to participate in one of those projects, and you should contact those projects to join them, but many of us work on profiles that encompass many areas/interests and may want to be in more than one project.

Please post your request to join us as an answer by clicking on the 'ANSWER THIS POST' link below.  Do not click on the comment or reply link(s).

Hi, I would like to be part of this for New York. I am currently part of the USBH Project adding profiles for western NY counties.
Hi John, this post was closed as a new join post has been started.  Please go to that post and click on the 'answer' button (NOT the comment button).

I would like to join the New York Project as part of this project.  I was born and raised in NYS and most of my research in in NY.

Lorraine, have you seen the USBH 1880 Census Project? We are adding profiles for every African American enumerated in the 1880 Census,  It is pretty interesting,
Message me if you would like more info.
USBH 1880 Census Project

I had looked into the 1880 project but it seemed pretty daunting and I'm pretty over-extended.  I thought by joining the New York Project, I could add the profiles I'm working on for personal research, my 2 one-name studies, and my one-place study, in New York, I could add profiles and pages to the New York Study.
Lorraine, as noted, this question has been closed because a new one was started.  You are welcome to join the U.S. project and the New York project, but you need to answer the new G2G post which is noted above.

Thanks for volunteering, Darlene. yessmiley I have several Mayflower ancestors and most of my lines trace to the first colonial immigrants. I spend quite a bit of time with Michigan, Connecticut, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Southwest Territory, North Carolina, Tennessee... I quite often trace the "geographical genealogy" too, trying to sort out various record because so many boundaries have changed. I have the first Quakers, Shakers, Baptists and yes, Mormons in my family so there is a lot of American history hidden in my genes. I too have been working on the 1950 census.

by Connie Mack G2G6 Mach 2 (23.1k points)

Hi Connie, I've awarded you the United States Project badge.  You may want to review the project pages for the states that you mentioned for ideas on ways to help.  You'll find links to all of the state projects on the main U.S. Project page.

As to the Mayflower, they have their own top-level project and badge, so you would want to answer their G2G post here to join the project and receive the project badge.

Your assistance throughout Wikitree is much appreciated!

Thank you, Darlene. Much appreciated. I'll review those pages again soon.

Hi. I'm Bev. I have ancestors all over the US, but I spend most of the time researching Georgia, Wisconsin, and New Mexico and that is probably what I'll work on for this project.

I have two questions. First, I was on the project page and couldn't find the maintenance list for Wisconsin. Could someone point me towards that?

Second, what am I looking at on the maintenance page when I look at the parentheses following a subject? For example, on the Georgia maintenance page, one entry reads, "Georgia, Needs Birth Record (0, 55, 0)". What do the 0, 55, 0 stand for?

Thanks for your help!
by Beverly Diaz G2G6 Mach 4 (41.0k points)

Hi Bev, thanks for your interest.  I have awarded you the U.S. Project badge.  In looking at the Wisconsin project page, I note that the project doesn't have a leader at the present time.  The coordinator, though, is [[Zalewski-1|Brian Zalewski]].  You can contact him.  Also, you can view the Wisconsin suggestions page provided by the Data Doctors project here.

I'm not sure what Georgia maintenance page you are looking at/referring to.  Perhaps reach out to the Georgia leader or coordinator.

Thanks for your help!

I'd like to join the United States Project. I'm mostly focused on the Midwest. I've been tracing families in Minnesota and Illinois as well as 19th century settlers in North Dakota and Wisconsin. I'd like some direction from the US Project and any Midwestern subprojects.
by U Swanson G2G6 (7.0k points)

Hi, thanks for your interest.  I've awarded you the U.S. project badge.  You can review the Minnesota project page for ways to assist; ditto with the other states.  The entire list of states with links to their project page is on the U.S. Project page here.  Most states have a leader and/or coordinator that you could contact with questions/comments.  Thanks for joining.

I would be interested in joining the Iowa project. I live near the Iowa Genealogical Society location in Des Moines, and have had family ties to Gowrie, Iowa, since about 1860. I also regularly volunteer with the Des Moines area cemeteries to clean and level out headstones that have been ravaged by time.

Additionally, I visit the following cemeteries at least annually, if not more frequently: Gowrie, Northlawn in Fort Dodge, and Union in Humboldt.
by Shaun Boyle G2G6 Mach 3 (31.8k points)

Hi Shaun, it sounds like you stay busy.  That's terrific with the cemeteries that you work on!  I have awarded you the U.S. project badge.  Wikitree also has a Cemeterist Project that you may want to join.  The Iowa project doesn't currently have a leader or coordinator, but the page has an ongoing list of ways to help.

I would like to join the Missouri project. I was born in 1946, in Audrain County and moved to St. Louis County in 1966, where I now live.  I've been doing genealogy for more than 40 years.  I've done multiple DNA tests and can trace my family back to Colonial Virginia, England, Scotland and Germany.  I've been on WikiTree for about 5 years.  I'm not sure exactly how I can contribute, but I have a great deal of knowledge about Missouri.
by John Ellis G2G3 (3.1k points)

Hi John, it's terrific to have you as part of Wikitree.  Welcome to the U.S. Project!  I've awarded you the project badge.  Please review the Missouri project page and reach out to their coordinator with any questions/comments.

I would like to become a member of the U. S. Project and have a specific interest in both Tennessee and Virginia.

I've contacted the Tennessee Project about developing a category to be called something like "First Families of Tennessee".

I have ancestors who were separately early settlers of East Tennessee, the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, and  the Germanna Colony in Virginia.

Thanks for your consideration & assistance!
by Peter Hiestand G2G1 (1.2k points)

Hi Peter, I've awarded you the U.S. Project badge.  Thanks for your work on and interest in both Tennessee and Virginia.

I have been very interested in genealogy since childhood. I am so lucky to live where my ancestors have lived, walked and farmed.  I have wondered why certain things in this area have always intrigued me. I found out through doing genealogy these places were my ancestors' homes, cemeteries they built and religious orders/sects they carried from other countries to here.   I live in the Harrisburg area and have knowledge of things passed down to me by my parents, grandparents and such.  I have many family lineage files.  I love doing this.  I would love to be able add my limited knowledge and files as needed.  I can trace many ancestors to many wars, rowing across the Delaware and bringing the Mennonite faith to PA after being invited by William Penn's son.
by Cindy Fogle G2G1 (1.9k points)

Hi Cindy, I've awarded you the U.S. Project badge.  I hope you will add your information about your ancestors to their profiles here at Wikitree for future generations to read.  Feel free to contact the leader/coordinator of the Pennsylvania project with questions/comments, and also feel free to work on profiles in any of the states.  We're glad to have you as part of the project!
