The Ohio Project covers the people, places, and events through time in the geographic region that we know today as Ohio. Fun Fact: Did you know that Ohio was once called the Western Reserve and controlled by the State of Connecticut?

See the Ohio Project for more information.  If you would like to help improve profiles, add categories, and other WikiTree content of Ohio origins, please:

  1. Answer this post. (Please post an answer, not a comment.) Tell us about your interests in Ohio — and how you intend to contribute — and we will get you a US History badge.
  2. Add Ohio to your followed tags.

Note:  The Ohio project does not have a separate badge from the United States Project.  So if you already have the U.S. project badge, you are all set to go.  Thank you!

Hello, I’m from ohio. Most of the family migrated in the early 1800s from various states. I have a mix of German and Irish folks. My main family is McCoy but I have Dixon, Profit, Kiser, Lehman, Zimmerman, Gillespie,Brown and many more. Some are dead ends, hope to break them. I’ve ran across some trees that are badly mangled maybe some can be fixed, fingers crossed
Looking for relatives on my father's side of the family. My maiden name is Jourdan.

I'd love to join! Everyone on my mom's dad's side of the family has been in Ohio since at least the late 1800s. I've gotten quite skilled at using some more obscure and difficult to use sources such as city directories to find my ancestors. I can definitely help others with their Ohio research, as I think it is where I am most skilled. I can do anything that needs to be done, including profile creation, research, g2g, challenges, sourcing, DBE, etc. I am most comfortable with Cuyahoga County and the Cleveland region
by Leila Keller G2G6 Mach 1 (18.7k points)
Thanks, Leila!
Is there something else I need to do to join? I see I have been awarded the badge.

Hi Leila, you're all set now that you have the badge.  There is an automated suggestion list that shows issues that need to be resolved on Ohio profiles.  Feel free to work on those or your own family interests.  Thanks for joining!

Great!
I am always interested in learning new skills for research, names and history....

I'd also love to join.  I currently work suggestions for the state of Ohio (usually locations, but also gedcom stuff) as a Data Doctor.  It's sometimes pretty lonely working Ohio suggestions and I'd love to share smiley  I already have a US History badge. Most of my family went to the Cincinnati area, some stayed, some moved further west.  I'm most familiar with the Hamilton County area.

Hi Kathy, as you mentioned you already had the U.S. History badge but I noted that you are interested in Ohio too. Thanks for all your Data Doctoring there.
Hi Kathy, what can you tell me about Shrum and Gawryszewski. I am always looking for help to learn more on research.... Thanks, happy Sunday.

 Chris
Nothing, sorry Chris.  But if you post another question in G2G about them, please include their WikiTree ids to help anyone else.

I haven't run into either of these names that I remember.

Just looking, there are a ton of shrums in Franklin County, Ohio. The Gawry... Name is going to be difficult as it will be misspelled frequently. There's a large Polish Czech community in Cleveland, Ohio in the 1900s.

Adding to our major metropolitan areas, I'll join for the Columbus area. Family has been in Seville since 1830ish, but some of us moved south a bit.

Arthur's post made me realize this is probably a good place to point to family names. Here's the easiest list for me, I'm trying to add profiles with sources for everyone in this publication:

I would like to join.  I am particularly interested in pre-statehood records, as my Gregg family moved to Ross County about 1800.  Other families there early are Roughton, Cozad, and possibly Fink.  My Gregg families left Ross County about 1840.

Ancestors on my paternal side lived in the South Eastern part of Ohio from the early 1800's thru the 1early 1900's.  Many still live in the area today.  My focus has been on Monroe county and surrounding counties.  I would be happy to lend my knowledge and support for those researching that area.

I'm in. Many of my lines have Ohio ties or moved to Ohio for and my fifth gg-father came to Ohio from the German Confederation.

I've worked on profiles with Knox County Durbins and have worked on category pages for the entire state.

And I lived in Ohio for several years. My eldest was born at Ohio State University's hospital. laugh

My ancestors migrated to Ohio in the 1800s. John Moses and Levi Moses - Our direct line comes from James Moses - who was the son of Levi and Martha Elizabeth Rogers -  but when we did our DNA through FTDNA - using my brother Mike and our first cousin Richard we discovered James was fathered by a Harris in Virginia.     Hoping to find some family out there who can help
by Katherine Mcanulty G2G2 (2.3k points)

That's interesting, Katherine. Maybe they were Palatinate immigrants from Virginia? Many of them moved to Ohio. smiley

You can add me. Most of my family has been in Ohio since the early 1800s. I also tend to focus on Ohio profiles when I have time to work on suggestions and unsourced profiles as well as in my work with the USBH project.

My paternal lineage has been solidly in Ohio since the early 1800s.  Many of the profiles I manage were born in and/or raised in Ohio.  I will gladly help out the Ohio project.

Many of my ancestors were in Harrison, Belmont, and Tuscarawras counties in the early 1800s.  I myself am in Franklin County.

I would like to join. My ancestors were almost all in Ohio before 1820, specifically in central Ohio - Knox, Licking, Muskingum, and Coshocton counties. I have 50 years of research experience, although the past twenty have been from a distance.

I would like to join the Ohio project. I have 42 known lines that came into Ohio in the 1800s (or earlier?) listed on my profile page. Ancestors are mainly down the middle of the state - Vinton, Ross, Pickaway, Franklin, Marion, Morrow, Richland, Crawford, Seneca, Hancock, Wyandot, Hardin Counties. I have been working on getting my own tree entered & can work on the data doctor suggestions too.
by Mary Kirtland G2G6 (9.3k points)

Thank you, Mary smiley

What were the family names in Wyandot and Hardin Counties?
Terry-7118, Peters-12319, Bryant-12530, Kemp in the Marseilles -> Grand Township, Marion Co. area

Chalfin-20 in the McGuffey area from 1890s

Clark-52976 in the Ada area from about 1900
