Would you like to learn how to research your Scottish ancestors in 2024?

The Scotland Project is hard at work improving profiles for our Scottish ancestors and we would love you to join us!  The Project covers all things Scottish so, no matter what your interests are, there's a team waiting for you!

You'll begin with a journey down our Tartan Trail (you can learn more about it here) where you'll not only improve and/or learn new skills researching your Scottish ancestors, but will also meet new people and learn to work within an active, collaborative WikiTree community.  While you're learning, you'll also be helping to clean up, source and connect our shared tree!

Membership is open to all who have:

  • signed WikiTree’s Honor Code
  • been a WikiTree member for at least 3 months, and
  • made at least 100 contributions to our shared tree

A major membership benefit of both the Tartan Trail and Project membership is the Scotland project's Discord server which provides real-time access to some of the most experienced Scottish researchers who can help with your questions.

After completion of the Tartan Trail Level 2, you will be awarded your Scotland Project Badge. You will then be required to join a team, work with your Team Leader(s) and respond to periodic Project Check-ins. We recognise that people lead busy lives and are grateful for any and all contributions made towards the project's goals.

PLEASE NOTE: if you are just looking for help with specific ancestors in Scotland, and don't wish to take the Tartan Trail and become active in the Scotland Project, then create a new message in G2G tagged SCOTLAND and one of our friendly Scotland Project team members will try to assist you :)

To start your journey, post an ANSWER below!

Don't forget to add the Scotland tag to your profile page

If you leave a *comment* here instead of an *answer,* your comments will be read and then removed. This thread is only for joining the project, and all other questions should be started on a separate G2G post.

Again, please be certain to click *answer* below, not *comment.*

More knowledge can never go amiss, and I really do not trust Geneanet Community Trees Index. I already use Scotland's people, along with the NLS maps.

hi, I haven't been a member for 3 months yet but I would really like to join. I have traced my Scotland family history as far back as the early 1600's and believe I have linked to Colin MacKenzie of Kintail. After him it goes to Alexander MacKenzie  and Barbara Gordon to Donald MacKenzie and Catherine McKellop to Archibald MacKenzie and Janet Thompson to John MacKenzie and Elizabeth Reid to John MacKenzie  and Anne Shringley to Archibald MacKenzie and Mary Ann to John Henry MacKenzie and Edith Fullerton to John H MacKenzie my grandfather who married Hazel Hicks, to my father, last name MacKenzie, to me.

I would like some more collaboration and resources and also some clarity on Mackenzies of kintail and see if what I have found is accurate or if it needs more work!

:)

Thank you!
Hi Carolyn,

I'm from Clan Mackenzie team.

I believe you are talking about Colin "Cam" Mackenzie, correct?

He had 2 sons with the name of Alexander.

- Alexander Mackenzie of Kilcoy and

- Alexander Mackenzie of Coul and Applecross (natural son)

neither married a Barbara Gordon.

You can PM or start a new message in G2G.
Looks like a need to do some more research! I appreciate your reply!

-The thing is, I know there is a link, there is a very old paper family tree in the possession of one of my fathers siblings that I have been trying to get my hands on for years. I have been trying to connect the dots myself on and off for quite a long time. I have not joined this site until recently so I am happy to have connected here and to have any help so many of the amazing people here offer to so many people!

Looking at your profile on here, I noticed you have a link to your Ancestry Tree.

Hope the following is helpful.

* Colin Mackenzie 4th Baronet of Coul has a wikitree profile and can be found - Click Here.  It is missing his wife "Henrietta Houston".

* George Mackenzie 2nd Earl of Seaforth has a wikitree profile and be found Click Here

* Barbare Gordon who married Alexander Mackenzie on 23/1/1741 can be found, Click Here

Thank you! I will see where this information take me! I appreciate it!

Hi there

I hope this is the correct way to submit a query.

I have hit a brick wall with my GGF Alexander McFarlane born approx. 1821 along with his brother Robert born approx. 1822, both in Brig O’Turk, Parish of Callander, Perthshire to a Donald McFarlane (farmer) and wife Margaret Fergusson (as per both Alexander & Robert’s Australian death records). The only marriage of a Donald & Margaret I could find on Scotlands People, were married in Callander Jun 30th 1808 , listed for some reason, in the middle of the page for 1806 marriages. Unfortunately, it appears that neither Alexander or Robert (or any other siblings - if any) had their births registered, so at this stage I can’t use the Scottish census’s to confidently identify the family. While in the 1841 census I did pick up a Robert born Brig O’Turk working away from the family as an Ag Lab, there are too many Alexanders living with a Donald & Margaret to be able to identify him – I did pick up both in 1851, but they no longer lived with their family. Robert migrated to Australia in 1852 and Alexander 1854.

Alexanders first daughter was born Jane Somerville in Roseneath 1854 (which for some reason became Helen Summerville) when she migrated, and as per her death record. The 2nd daughter was named “Mary Ann SMITH” – her maternal grandmother, while the 3rd daughter was named “Margaret FERGUSSON” her paternal grandmother. I haven’t had any success in identifying who the Jane/Helen was in either the paternal or maternal lines.

I have had my DNA done which connects me to both Alexander & Robert via the descendants of each, and have attached it to my Ancestry site records. At this stage I haven’t been able to find a family tree connection on any of the other major genealogical sites.

Any suggestions, including how I could identify any of Alexander & Robert’s siblings would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks – Bob Andrews

Greetings,

I'd like to join  the Scotland Project and further my family history research. I'm 35% Scottish by DNA analysis. It is all from my maternal lineage. Some family names for me from Scotland are Dunbar, Twaddle, Kerr and McConaghy, . I look forward to connecting!

Take care,

Marie

My FTDNA Y700 DNA test results reveal that I am a direct descendent of Gospatric Dunbar (b 1040) and hence Thane Crínán (b 975), both of Scotland. However, my Dunbar paternal paper trail ends with Samuel Dunbar (b 1754) in Wicklow Ireland. I am very interested in connecting Samuel Dunbar in Ireland to my ancient lineage in Scotland
