Would you like to learn how to research your Scottish ancestors in 2024?

The Scotland Project is hard at work improving profiles for our Scottish ancestors and we would love you to join us!  The Project covers all things Scottish so, no matter what your interests are, there's a team waiting for you!

You'll begin with a journey down our Tartan Trail (you can learn more about it here) where you'll not only improve and/or learn new skills researching your Scottish ancestors, but will also meet new people and learn to work within an active, collaborative WikiTree community.  While you're learning, you'll also be helping to clean up, source and connect our shared tree!

Membership is open to all who have:

  • signed WikiTree’s Honor Code
  • been a WikiTree member for at least 3 months, and
  • made at least 100 contributions to our shared tree

A major membership benefit of both the Tartan Trail and Project membership is the Scotland project's Discord server which provides real-time access to some of the most experienced Scottish researchers who can help with your questions.

After completion of the Tartan Trail Level 2, you will be awarded your Scotland Project Badge. You will then be required to join a team, work with your Team Leader(s) and respond to periodic Project Check-ins. We recognise that people lead busy lives and are grateful for any and all contributions made towards the project's goals.

PLEASE NOTE: if you are just looking for help with specific ancestors in Scotland, and don't wish to take the Tartan Trail and become active in the Scotland Project, then create a new message in G2G tagged SCOTLAND and one of our friendly Scotland Project team members will try to assist you :)

To start your journey, post an ANSWER below!

Don't forget to add the Scotland tag to your profile page

If you leave a *comment* here instead of an *answer,* your comments will be read and then removed. This thread is only for joining the project, and all other questions should be started on a separate G2G post.

Again, please be certain to click *answer* below, not *comment.*

Yes, I have Scottish names Laird and Guthrie in my tree who were located in Ireland. I would like to know why they went there. Also, we have some redheads in the family!

I’d like to join but I don’t have 100 contributions.  I may need to start transferring my ancestors from my tree at ancestry based on documents and DNA.  The names are Nicolson and McDougall, Lamont from Stenscholl, Isle of Skye and North Uist and Stornoway, Isle of Lewis and Murray, Smith and McAulay.  I have my DNA from Ancestry I should add to my profile.

if I add to my tree will it go to the big tree or do I go somewhere else?  I can just tag and get a Scotland G2G helper when I’ve built up my tree more.

Best, Marne

Hello, I am interested in joining.  I am somewhat new to Wikitree so may not meet the 100-post requirement.  However, for consideration, I am the Genealogist for the Clan Logan Society and therefore will be looking to get a grasp on the very diverse Logan Genealogy.  I will accept any help I can get and am happy to contribute.

I would like to join the Scotland Project and Tartan Trail. It looks like I meet all of the criteria: I am an Honor Code Signatory, have been a WT member for five months, and have made over 300 contributions to the tree.

So I guess the next step is to start down the Tartan Trail...

I have a maternal link to Scotland radiating from the Edinburgh and the Fife areas. The available scottish records tend to be summary documents only rather than any detailed census information as provided across the border in England. Ways of researching scottish ancestry in a more detailed manner would be much welcome. The ability to interrogate documents is essential to accurate researching. Walking the streets through connecting documents is almost as good as being there on the enumeration day. Love to if I qualify.

As a plurality of my DNA is Scottish, I would very much like to learn more about researching the origins of said DNA.

Yes, I would like to join this project.  Firstly, as I have Scottish ancestry somewhere and I would like to work on a volunteer project to see what I would learn.  I haven't volunteered before so this sounds like a good place to start.

I just joined the Wikitree fellowship. I have used Wikitree for years to backcheck my 18th century and older ancestors. I am in my first month of membership and have not made any contributions yet. So, I don’t qualify to join. I have a great-great grand father from Orkney and my wife is a Ross with Scottish origins. How can I help?

Brenda, do you mean Lancashire or Lanarkshire? Lancashire is in England, Lanarkshire is in Scotland smiley

I’m interested in the Scottish Project because both my husband (RUSSELL) and I (ULREY) have Scottish DNA and we’re trying to connect our trees back to Scotland.

I would love to learn more about researching my ancestors from Scotland. I have been interested in Scotland for some time, but that interest has been recently renewed as I've learned more information about my surname and it's origins. As another outlet for learning, I've begun learning to read and speak Scots Gaelic.
