Which Mayflower Passenger and First Thanksgiving Attendee are you most closely connected to?

The US is set to celebrate Thanksgiving this Thursday, so we're looking at one of the events that inspired the national holiday, the first Thanksgiving held at Plymouth Colony.

All our featured connections are Mayflower passengers, starting with Richard Warren. He is special for genealogists because he has the most living descendants. Here are the other passengers we're including in the Connection Finder:

Which of these is closest to you on our single family tree? If you're one of the 31.2 million of us who are connected to each other on our big tree, you can check with the Connection Finder.

In addition to the above and our many Featured Connections, you can check your connections to any category on WikiTree, such as Mayflower Compact Signatories, Mayflower Passengers, and Massachusetts Bay Colonists. Click the green MyConnections button in the upper right hand corner of the category page.

Let us know how you're related below. If you want to share your connection on social media with cousins and friends, click the "get shareable image" below the results, e.g. John F. Kennedy and Richard Warren. Then just upload it along with the URL of your direct connection. (Please refrain from sharing your connection on the featured profiles themselves, though. It clutters conversations on research and collaboration. Thanks!)

Help us find and improve the profiles for next week's feature on Rosalynn Carter and First Ladies.

I do not know because my Mom was adopted by my maternal Grandfather. I have always known my biological  Grandfather 's name, but only recently started building a little "tree" to look into that side.

Richard More-7c11r

I am more connected to the first sit-down dinner with the indigenous people where they saved the European immigrants from starvation the first time, in Jamestown.

We have that one scheduled as a theme possibility next year.
Me also, the real first Thanksgiving!

Ancestors/Cousins:

29 Generations    Elinor More

29 Generations    Jasper More

29 Generations    Mary More

29 Generations   Richard More

33 Generations   Agnes (Cooper) Tilley

34 Generations   Henry Samson

34 Generations    Humility Cooper

39 Generations    Katherine (White) Carver

I had heard for many years in family discussions that I had a connection to Richard More.  He is not only the only original Mayflower Pilgrim with a still existing gravesite  (Salem, Massachusetts), but also the one passenger that the Mayflower Society states is the most difficult to connect to as a relative.

Obviously, this is a close-knit group, so all of them fall between 23 and 26 degrees for me:

  • 23 = John Alden, Remember Maverick, Richard More
  • 24 = William Bradford, Elizabeth Hopkins, Myles Standish, Richard Warren, Susanna Winslow
  • 25 = Mary Brewster, Edward Doty
  • 26 = Elinor Armstrong, Samuel Fuller
No Germans on the Mayflower, so no cousins for me ... ;-)

It looks like the First Ladies Connection Question has already been asked today and doesn't have to wait until next week... ?!?

by Oliver Stegen G2G6 Pilot (126k points)
Well, that one is a member question and only focuses on Rosalyn. The weekly post will look at first ladies from around the globe.

Well, it does ask for connections to First Ladies in general, and the answers seem to treat it like the Connection Finder Question of the week. I myself hadn't noticed the difference when answering earlier today.

Me too!

After going through the whole Mayflower Passengers list, here's what I've found:

John Howland - 12th great grandfather

Joan (Hurst) Tilley - 13th great grandmother

Elizabeth (Howland) Tilley - 12th great grandmother

John Tilley - 13th great grandfather

Additionally, I have Edward Tilley as my 13th great uncle and Katherine (White) Carver as my 14th great aunt
by Ada Bourgeois de Beaubassin G2G2 (3.0k points)
I have Tilley and Howland too! I checked and we're 10th cousins twice removed :)
Thats cool!

Three at 13 degrees and one at 16.  The rest are in between.  The only cousin (9th, 10 times removed) was the farthest away in terms of connections.

In spite of the small range of connection counts, the paths are quite diverse, passing through my paternal grandfather, maternal grandmother, maternal grandfather, and wife.

My closest at 12 degrees are John Alden and Myles Standish, both 10th great, gramdfathers.

John Alden is also 12 degrees from me and my tenth great grandfather... not as close with Myles Standish though...

Mary Chilton as my ninth great grandmother.  Eleven degrees away.  The legend is that Mary was the first woman (she was thirteen years old) to step onto Plymouth Rock.  Her father James Chilton died when the Mayflower was off Cape Cod before they moved on to Plymouth.  Her mother, whose name is not known, died during that first terrible winter.
