I grew up in Kentucky, and one of my childhood memories is how annoyed I was to see "Land of Lincoln" on Illinois license plates.  I had seen Lincoln's birthplace in Kentucky and his boyhood home in Indiana.  What claim could Illinois possibly have?

In fact Lincoln is my closest connection at 14 degrees and cousin at 7th, 5 times removed.  Alas, my Kentucky roots don't go deep, and the connection is through my sister-in-law, a second-generation Californian.  She turns out to have had a Kentuckian second great grandfather about Lincoln's age.

Jesse Stuart is equally connected at 14 degrees, this time though my mother and back to Pennsylvania.

I do have an aunt with Kentucky ancestors back to about 1800, but in all but two cases a path through her is longer.
