March 22 is the anniversary of the massacre at Jamestown Colony, so we're looking at Jamestown colonists in the Connection Finder this week starting with one of the founding colonists, Captain Christopher Newport.

Here are more Jamestown colonists to check your connection to:

Which one is most closely connected to you? If you're one of the 28.9 million of us who are connected to each other on our big tree you can check with the Connection Finder.

In addition to the above and our many Featured Connections, you can check your connections to any category on WikiTree, such as Jamestown Colonists and Virginia Colonists. Click the green MyConnections button in the upper right hand corner of the category page.

Let us know how you're related below. If you want to share your connection on social media with cousins and friends, click the "get shareable image" below the results, e.g. Ada Lovelace and Captain Christopher Newport. Then just upload it along with the URL of your direct connection. (Please refrain from sharing your connection on the featured profiles themselves, though. It clutters conversations on research and collaboration. Thanks!)

Help us find and improve the profiles for next week's Irish Notables feature.

-James Hildreth, descendant

Hello, according to Boddie's Virginia Historical Genealogies, we are descended from colonel Robert Wynne.  Unfortunately the Jamestown Society won't accept Boddie as an authoritative source so I've got a generation in there that needs better proof.  In my copious spare time (who knows when?) I would love to run this down.

John Smith 9th cousin 13 times removed through ferrer ancestors.
I am also (if my amateur research is correct) a direct descendant of "Col." Robert Wynne. Researching my Wynne family (to Virginia, to Canterbury, and to Wales) is one of my reasons I found Wikitree. However, I just started my file here, and haven't figured out yet how it works completely, but thought I would connect with you since no doubt, we're cousins. :-)  My late mother was a Wynne (maiden name, b. 1924) and my middle name is Wynne (b. 1946) as is my older daughter's middle name (b. 1977).

I am descended from Cheney Boyce [Boyce-967] and Sarah (Mistress Boyse) [Unknown-408847] (11th GGPs).  My wife is descended from Alice Bennett formerly Snayle aka Pierce [Snayle-1] (11th GGM) and Elizabeth (Pierce) Jackson [Pierce-7423] (10th GGM).

On May 22, 1622, all three women were taken, along with as many as 17 other women, in the area around Martin’s Hundred plantation.

In May 1623, plans were made with Opchanacanough to negotiate peace and the release of the missing women. He released Mistress Boyse  [Unknown-408847] as a good faith gesture, with the implied message that he would negotiate for the release of the remaining women. “When she rejoined her countrymen she was dressed like an Indian queen in a tire that probably would have included native Pearl necklaces, copper medallions, various furs and feathers, and deer skin dyed red she was the only woman sent back at this time and remained the sole returned captive for many months.”

By 1624, no more than seven of the fifteen to twenty hostages had returned to Jamestown. The majority of them returned with Jane Dickenson. It is believed that among them was Alice Snayle (Pierce – Bennett) Snayle-1 and her daughter Eilzabeth Pierce Pierce-7423

The closest is Thomas Graves at 14 degrees.  His grandson married a many-times great-grandmother of mine, but was not the father of her children.

Temperance West is a close second at 15 and most of the others are less than 20 degrees away.

Special mention and hello to Valerie Penner, also 14 degrees, connected through the lone Norwegian in my extended family.

I am most closely connected to Robert Beheathland at 15 degrees. This should not be a surprise, looking at the headline of the article attached to his profile. (Yes, this is me nudging folks to look at his profile.) This connection comes through my Bulla relations.

I am, however, very distantly related to Temperance Flowerdew West, though the degree is much further.

I have yet to look at my connections, but I love the name 'Flowerdew'. I know it's a surname and wonder what poetic soul came up with it?
