Interpretation help "abgegangener Schullehrer"

In a marriage record from Hörden, Baden, 1810, I find the groom's father referred to as an "abgegangener Schullehrer". I have a bit of trouble with the adjective. I believe the most likely interpretation is "retired", since deaths are usually indicated by "verlebt" in this record set, "verstorben" being a distant second. But I am not sure. Has anyone ever seen "abgegangen" used to mean "deceased" in early 19th century records from (catholic) Baden?

Hey Gus,

"abgegangen" means he left his position at the school, probably to work somethere else (in another town), but of course it also could mean that he retired. It does certainly not mean that he died.
