Hello and welcome to Team Splendid Spruces! It's time to start thinking about the WikiGames!

We have three events
Sourcing Slalom starting Friday, August 25 at 8 am EDT/Noon UTC
Cross Country Connecting on Saturday, August 26 at 8 am EDT/Noon UTC
CC7x7 Wall Climb on Sunday, August 27 at 8 am EDT/Noon UTC.

*Here is the full livecast schedule for the hangouts, every four hours: Space:WikiGames#LiveCast_Schedule

Come visit our Team Page at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Splendid_Spruces and let us know what you’ll be working on. Or you can start your own thread below by Answering this post. You can give us updates on your progress, ask for and give help, etc. Remember don't start on our 4 Olympians until the start of the CC7x7 wall climb to maximise the gain. Nothing wrong with identifying potential connections beforehand though.

Please consider joining us on the Splendid Spruces Team Discord Channel. It’s a lot of fun to have live conversations going on during these types of events. If you’re not already on the Discord server there are instructions on the help page.

I am looking forward to hanging out with you!

Amy ~ Team Cheerleader!

A big thank-you to the wonderful Spruces who taught me how to contribute in the wall crawl! Now I'll be able to participate in more challenges. That Connectors badge on my profile has been collecting dust, but now I can use it.

Can someone make sure his profile is open or that we are on his trusted list?
As he is Australian I look forward to working on his profile as I am familiar with the sources. Have to confess to not having heard of him.
This one is open and ready for Sunday!

I had planned to focus my attention on this guy, since he intersects with a project I'm involved with, and I spend a fair amount of time on Johnson's already(!) They're all over North Carolina...

Hello team, I am on discord and joined our chat channel. I will prepare for either of the two American Olympians as I am much better with those records.

hi team members, i will 'prepare' for William Kilgour Jackson  - mother's side, since i am in the UK.

Though i have not had much success with my Scottish ancestors.

I have a subscription to 'FindmyPast' if that helps anyone.

cheers, Allan
by Allan Entwistle G2G6 Mach 3 (38.2k points)
Hi, i have used FindmyPast to work on William Kilgour Jackson - my ID is -: 'AllanEn6903853'

anyone with a F.M.P. account should be able to see that family tree.

What is everyone doing for the sources event? I just found out that my Watchlist has quite a few that aren't sourced, so I going to start with those.

Hope everyone has Sourcer and Browser Extention added to their Chrome, Brave, Firefox, or Safari browser.
by Judy Bramlage G2G6 Pilot (215k points)
I do NOT have the extension, how do I do that??
Hello Tammie,

Click on the tab 'Find'  -  top right hand corner

mover your cursor over ' << Apps'   - which is the first in the list, move your cursor to the left and then down

select :-   WikiTree Browser Extension

there are help details to tell you how to install the 'extension' into your browser.
Thanks, easy enough directions that I found it!

Hi Allan,

I'm in Germany. smiley

So, if anyone should find connections for our Olympic 4 which go to Germany / Prussia (including today's Poland) / Switzerland / Austria, this would be my piece of sunday's cake. wink

Unfortunately, I will probably not be able to take part in the Games as much as I intended to and still would like to, but I will definitely do whatever I can! smiley

looking forward to it,

Vanessa

For this girl that is used to wallowing in the Ozarks, none of these Olympians will be easy, but I am going to place my attention on Rafer Johnson and see what I can do for him using mainly FamilySearch records.

Good morning from Australia on Tuesday. Looking forward to working with everyone. I have access to FindMyPast and ancestry.com.

Regards

Anne

Anne, can i suggest that you either work on FindmyPast or at least keep a copy of the GEDCOM on there, and make the tree 'Public' - i will do the same for William Kilgour Jackson.

An update from my research on William Kilgour Jackson, born 14 Mar 1871 in Lamington, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, United Kingdom.

I found that William was related to John Rennie (b 1931) - John formulated the well known indigestion tablets known as 'Rennies'.

And via the 'Mellor' family i have been able to connect William to the wider Wikitree family.

I have Ancestry and a subscription to GenealogyBank, if those help anyone.  Willing to help wherever needed.
by Tammie Cochran G2G6 Pilot (409k points)
Hello Tammie,

can i suggest that you work on John Paul "Jack" Garrity

( born 1 Apr 1926 in Woburn, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States ), and then we have all 4 Olympians covered.
Will see what I can find on him.
I also have FG, if needed.

Hey team! Pleased to meet you all. I have worldwide access to Ancestry and Findmypast as my main sources, happy to work wherever. I can see Allan has done lots of prep for William Kilgour Jackson, do any of the other Olympians need work? I have some experience of American genealogy if Garrity prep might be useful, although I confess not so much African-American.
by James Green G2G2 (2.7k points)

Hi James,

Can i suggest that you work on 'Kenneth George Kennedy'

using FindmyPast and make it public.

I will contact Anne Young.

thanks,

Allan

I'll do my best!
Greetings James - just saw your Kennedy tree on FMP

Regards

Anne
Hi Anne - yes, I was able to put a bit of time in last night. There are some definite Wikitree connections in there, I've put their Wikitree IDs in the notes where I've found them. Should be helpful! Let me know if I'm unintentionally duplicating any work.

All team members - if you find any persons born in Germany, Poland, Austria, or Switzerland - please let Vanessa have their details.

James and Ann - great to see you on FMP

To all Team Members  -  if you have not already seen it,

this post appeared in the 'WikiGames Questions' thread :

question :-

1. Can you confirm how the team score will be calculated for the wall climb challenge? Is the team score the highest cc7 from one of their assigned  athletes? ( as opposed to their cc7s added together)....

Answer :-

1. The highest cc7 from one of the assigned athletes.

....commented 2 hours ago by Eowyn Walker

IF correct then this will change how we go about the task on Sunday - i have asked Eowyn for confirmation, as it would seem very unfair on those members who have worked so hard on all of the Olympians (not just in our team).

Could everybody in the team send in an update on where they are.

I have uploaded the GEDCOM for 'William Kilgour Jackson'

and there are about 15 connections to other existing profiles. At a rough estimate i would think the CC7 for him would be about 400 - 500.

I am working on John Paul "Jack" Garrity.  So far this is what I have on his tree; 54 people, 195 records.  Nothing really interesting so far that I have found.  I have gone as far as 4 generations, but not all of them are complete (with all the children and their spouses and families)

Is this what you are asking?

Hello Tammie, thanks for the reply.

It has been confirmed that only ONE of the olympians will be counted, So we have to decide which one do we go with.

I have about 500 records with 'William Kilgour Jackson',

so do we go with him ?

Sure. You said that you uploaded a GEDCOM for 'William Kilgour Jackson'.  Where would I find it so that I can help instead of starting a new tree on Ancestry?

Thank you!
Unfortunately (as far as i know) uploaded GEDCOMS can not be shared.

I will download a smaller version and send it to you, can you send me a private message, so that i have your email address.
I haven't seen anything that holds potential for impressive numbers for Rafer Johnson.  He is a fairly recent death with close family still living, slave ancestry and lots of endogamy, which suits my temperament, but it is slow going, creating profiles one at a time.  I haven't found any lines that were already on WT.

One way we could share is to post to a Space page and then all of us could see it. When working from a Gedcom I have found in the past that sharing them out is difficult.  If nothing else, the sources seem to get lost.  I wasn't planning on working on Sunday, but I can apply myself to doing profiles if someone else provides the sources. Or I can clean up Bios. Any takers?

And if it practical, I think we should apply ourselves to two of the Olympians, but go for the highest scores.
by Judy Bramlage G2G6 Pilot (215k points)
I have never done a challenge like this one.  How does it work with a group of people?  I am willing to help where I can.

I do not have the WBE on my computer, that will make any sourcing very slow.  I am good, and fairly fast at searching with the few tools that I have.  If I hit a block, then I can pass things to someone else.

Please just let me know how to proceed.

To all Team members,

my feeling is that we should go with 'William Kilgour Jackson',

i already have the GEDCOM uploaded and ready to go.

The big problem is that i use FindmyPast which produces shall we say not very good gedcoms, they come out to say the least a little mixed up.

So i would suggest that other team members go through the resulting profiles and tidy them up and provide additional sources where necessary.

I hear that 2 other teams have close links to existing profiles with over 4000 connections.
by Allan Entwistle G2G6 Mach 3 (38.2k points)
I have heard "suggestions" about some of the other teams also.  Not sure how much of it might be a bluff or just someone being hopeful.
