The State of West Virginia is 160 years old today and to celebrate, I have a few fun facts about this Wild and Wonderful State.....

  • The state is nicknamed "The Mountain State" because it is home to more than 500 mountains, including the highest point in the Appalachian Mountains, Mount Rogers.
  • The Golden Delicious apple was first discovered in West Virginia in 1775. It is now one of the most popular apple varieties in the world.
  • The first Mother's Day was celebrated in West Virginia in 1908. Anna Jarvis, the daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis, organized the first official Mother's Day celebration at a Methodist church in Grafton.
  • The New River Gorge Bridge is the longest steel arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere. It spans a length of 1,700 feet and is a popular tourist destination.

Famous People who were born in West Virginia:  Pearl S. Buck, Chuck Yeager, and Stonewall Jackson

....and West Virginia is the only State that is fully and 100% in Appalachia!

I invite you to join the West Virginia Project and the Appalachia Project to work on all things West Virginia.  Also, join us on the Appalachia Project Discord as we document the State and all Appalachian regions.
