I am working on orphaned profiles. I keep coming across profiles that I can't do anything with it because there is no edit button. Why?

Melanie, look at top right of any profile page to see the lock icon indicating its privacy level.  The one you linked here is green, which means "public".  That level permits everyone (members and the public) to see everything on the profile, but only trusted list can edit it.  It has to have a white lock, meaning "open", for members to be able to edit it.

Gary Blaine does not have any birth or death date, which was permitted at the time the profile was added, but is no longer permitted, so we can't tell whether it is required to be open.  If you have a source that shows he was born more than 150 years ago or died more than 100 years ago then you can file an open profile request.

You can also try contacting the profile manager, which is not too likely to get a response, since he joined in 2009, made 10 contributions, and hasn't been seen here since.  I recommend following the steps in the Unresponsive Manager Request, that include sending him a private message and waiting a week for a response.

The profile you've linked has a profile manager and the privacy is "Public" privacy. Only "Open" profiles can be edited by people not on the Trusted List.

You can't edit that profile because it has the privacy settings of Public. That means we can see the content, but only members of the Trusted List can edit it.

There are color-coded symbols on the page that indicate privacy level. Public is green. Only Open profiles, which are indicated by a no-color unlocked padlock, are editable by people who aren't on the Trusted List.

Thanks. Didn't know that.
