Misassigned service DAR SAR stickers

Hi,

I've been researching the activities of my ancestors during the revolutionary war. Naturally this leads to the DAR and SAR web sites for information.

My question is:

How should we handle a profile where the DAR and/or SAR has misassigned the service of another person? This seems to have happened frequently with persons with the same name.

Example: Benjamin North (1721-1777) Ancestor #: A084503 Had a son Benjamin North (1749-1817) who was the Lieutenant in CAPT ABRAHAM REMSON'S CO.

John St. John (abt.1737-1816) Ancestor #: A099165 had a cousin who was probably the corporal in CAPT JABEZ GREGORY's company. (research notes currently a work in progress)

Is it appropriate to apply the DAR etc. stickers to their profiles? These are the men that the DAR etc. are talking about even if their service is incorrect.

Should the DAR etc. stickers be moved to the Research Notes section, where we explain why the service is incorrect?

What about the profiles of the men who actually performed the service?

Some of those issues are the reason why some of the SAR records may have notes that records must be shown to prove things again.  SAR was not always checking the sources and information.

Same with the "flags" on the main records of DAR patriot ancestors found online in DAR-grs. I recently added a comment to one profile about his DAR record, which included the following message for the "Why?" of the flag:

This code indicates that no application or supplemental application has been verified on this ancestor since the very early days of the society. As such, this means all information on this ancestor and his or her descendants must be documented using current DAR standards. In this case, a national number may not be cited as proof.

Great point R. North.

If it were me I would utilize the == Research Notes == section to explain my beliefs and suggestions, but barring any sources that state otherwise, I would NOT be altering a profile, expecially if it is not under my care.

I have various ancestors who fought in the American Revolution (albeit on the OTHER side!) and all of my assumptions that are not backed up with solid sources are in the Research Notes, to be proven or diproven at a later date.

I hope this answers your question R.

Yes, utilizing the ==Research Notes== is a correct action, (I did this) but does not address the question.

I am not talking about altering a profile. I created the the Benjamin North profile. The question is about applying a sticker which implies incorrect information. Ironically "Patriot Ancestor"  is a good description of  Benjamin North (1721). However, placing the DAR sticker front and center implies that his "Service" meets the DAR standard. This is debatable as the service attributed to him in the DAR and SAR applications is incorrect.

The question is what is the best way to handle this?

1. Do not add the sticker and explain why it was not applied in the Research Notes.

2. Apply the sticker and hope that people will read the Research Notes.

3. Place adjacent to the sticker something like:

 A.[PLEASE READ RESEARCH NOTES]

B. [DAR service incorrect, Please read notes]

C. [Something else]

4. Something else.
