How do I remove myself from a profile that was added in error?

Lewis J. "French & Indian" Green-15176 could not possibly be my ancestor, but somehow my DNA was attached to his profile as a descendant.  My ancestor, was Massey Green who married Wm. Sandlin, who has been assumed to be some Lewis Green...(there were several), but the "French & Indian" Green was never in NC where she was born.  He lived and died in VA.  She was not mentioned in his will either.   This is a long standing error that must be corrected for many of us who descend from Massey.

Go to the post.

Click the Privacy tab.

Scroll toward the bottom and you'll see a "Remove Myself" (or similar button) that allows you to disconnect gracefully.

I think that simply removes you from the Trusted List for a given profile. It doesn't disconnect you from the individual as a genealogical relative, so it wouldn't affect propagation of information into the "DNA Connections" panel. If I'm wrong about that, someone is sure to correct me soon. wink

Your DNA propagated on to any profile that shares a direct ancestor with you (so not just your own ancestors, but also your cousins). It does this through every such connection in Wikitree, out to 7 steps away from your profile.

The only way to have your DNA test stop showing on Lewis’s profile (other than the drastic step of removing your DNA info from Wikitree entirely) is to disconnect Massey from Lewis.

You commented on Massey’s profile months ago, and someone commented on Lewis’s profile in 2015, saying she should be disconnected. There has never been objection. So I’d say just go ahead and disconnect them.

But: I would place a research note on Lewis’s page with a prominent heading about his disputed children.

Then, Massey’s profile needs work anyway, but part of that work should be a clear narrative explaining why it is very unlikely she is the daughter of Lewis. If your DNA has no matches to descendants of Lewis on websites where you compare, that can be part of the evidence.

Great answer. I would only add that there is also the option to mark parent/child relationships uncertain. I've found this to be the easiest approach in some situations where there are active members who have grown a bit too attached to an unsourced family mythology.

This will not remove one's DNA from the automatic list of descendants and cousins, but it will let people know that something is not settled genealogy.
