I am hoping someone can help figure out what happened to [[Ellendsen-9|Ellend (Ellendsen) Fretheim (1801-abt.1870)]]

On 23 April 1870, Ellend traveled with his son Erik, Erik's wife Anna, and his daughter Ingeborg to meet with his older son Ellend who had been in the USA since 1857.  They traveled on the ship "Maryland" which left Bergen on 5 May 1870 and arrived in Quebec on 22 June 1870.

From Quebec, it is unknown what happend to Ellend. He was not listed as dieing on the ship, but he was not in Edgarton, MN when the others met his son. It is presumed he died either in Quebec, or enroute to Minnesota, but no records have been found.  It is known that the rest of the party traveled by train from Quebec to Edgarton.

First you would have to access the actual ship record to see if he was among the passenger manifest.  It can be viewed here: https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/immigration/immigration-records/passenger-lists/passenger-lists-1865-1922/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=646&

As a tip, when you go from one page to the next, to view it properly and not have to back-up over and over, open each page in another tab.

Other than that, unfortunately 1870 falls within the time period where records of deaths are not necessarily available freely.  And there are no records of passengers on trains.
Thanks.  I have a copy of the passenger list, and have confirmed that he was listed as a passenger and survived the journey.  But it's also good to have an online link to add as a reference.     We have had people check in some places along the way for potential death records, but haven't found any yet.  Unfortunately, although there are old letters in the family, none of them make mention of the death.
is there an immigration record into the US?  Quite likely not, at least in the reverse direction such don't exist, not at all kept before the 1900s for overland crossings.

For a death record, you run into the problem of all the places along the way where such could be, and the fact that since his name is neither French nor English, might have gotten totally mangled.
We have been unable to locate any immigration record to the US. Not unusual though, we haven't any for the rest of the family.  We do have their naturalization records.  But none, for Ellend.  That isn't expected though as he didn't make it to Edgarton.  WI btw not MN, put that wrong in the original post.

Based on the letter from his son (also Ellend), he would have gone by train from Quebec through Chicago.  But, we don't know whether he made it on the train or not (could have passed in Quebec), or if he did, where along the way he secumbed.   There is also no indication or record of them having made stops along the way.

the above is a map of the rail lines that existed then, expandable.  As you can see, between Québec city and any US destination there are lots of stop-overs.
My guess is that most likely he died in Quebec City itself.  Is there a good way to search for deaths in 1870 there?
by that time there are a number of parishes in Québec city.  Was he Catholic or Protestant?  That could narrow the search down.
He was Lutheran.
darn, there's a Lutheran church in Québec city, but it appears to have only opened in 1882, too late for this.  Checking other protestant denominations, I don't find a funeral for him.
