In honor of Essex Lee

Question

Essex Lee served in the United States Navy for over 20 years, including a lengthy stint during the Civil War. Still, as the 1870 census shows, he was unable to vote, because he was black.

I just wanted to share this man with you. The records of his life are scarce, but he spent years serving a country who wouldn't even given him the basic rights of citizenship.
