Biography

Helen was born in 1789 to Walter Turnbull and Elizabeth Dickson and died between 1841 and 1851.

Born 6 Nov 1789 Dykehead, Kirk Andrews, Cumberland, England [1]

Baptized 22 Nov 1789 Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland

entry reads: Walter Turnbull and Eliz. Dixon Dykehead, Kirk Andrews had a Dr born Nov 6th, bapd 22d [2]

Died between 1841 and 1851 ?Rockcliffe Cumberland, or ?Annan, Dumfriesshire

Eleanor was not with husband Robert in 1851 census, and he remarries in 1853.
Her death is not obvious in the English Death index.
NB many trees show Eleanor as dying 1848 in Durham. The only (female) Kirkup deaths registered in Durham in 1848 were an Elizabeth and an Eleanor. The latter was only aged 19. [3]

Research Notes

From a growing collection of DNA matches between descendants of Helen's brother Robert, and descendants of Margaret Kirkup, the daughter of Robert Kirkup and Eleanor Turnbull, where Eleanor is shown by census data to be born between 1792 and 1796, Helen Is assumed to be this latter Eleanor despite the small age discrepancy (1789 from baptism vs 1792, the earliest implied by the 1841 census).
I would be more comfortable with the id if more DNA matches popped up with lines down from other than Margaret, given her husband, William Wills, also has ancestry from around Arthuret, but we are lucky to get any DNA matches at this far removed.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Eleanor by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Eleanor:

Turnbull-1523 and Turnbull-343 appear to represent the same person because: yet more DNA matches, still from descendants of Margaret however, have convinced me these are one and the same person.

Would love to hear from any DNA tested descendants of Eleanor *.

Trying to prove that Eleanor who married Robert KIRKUP is Helen, Turnbull-343, dtr of Walter TURNBULL and Elizabeth DICKSON, and thus sister of my 3* great grandfather Robert TURNBULL who married Eleanor SCOTT

  • or of course from anyone with documentary proof of this connection
