James Kirkup was baptized May 24, 1829 in Arthuret. Cumberland, England. His parents were Robert Darnley Kirkup and Eleanor (Turnbull) Kirkup. He had nine known siblings including his half brother. His mother died abt. 1848. He, his father and two of his sisters went to Scotland where all four of them marry between 1850 and 1855. James married Jane Nelson 1854, Annan, Dumfries, Scotland. He was back in England with his new wife for the birth of their son, 1855. He and his young family migrated to Canada and settled in Ontario, Canada by 1857. He and Jane had eight more children and raised them in Simcoe, Ontario. His occupation was farming. James Kirkup died Oct. 26, 1890 in Simcoe, Ontario. He is buried at Christ Church Anglican Cemetery in Simcoe, Ontario.
1841 James age 12 is listed in the household of his father with his mother and five of his siblings. His father's occupation is listed as Farmer. Their home is in Rockliffe, Cumberland.[2]
1851 James age 22 is listed in the household of his father. His mother is deceased. Also listed, two of his sisters, his sister's husband and child, his nephew and two farm workers. Their address is Northfield Farm, Annan, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.[3]
1854 James marries Jane Nelson on May 22, 1854 in Annan, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.[4]
1855 James is back in England with his wife for the birth of their first son.[5]
1856 About this time James and his young family travel to Canada. They are settled in Ontario, Canada for the birth of their second son in 1857.[5] James' father-in-law, Irving Nelson, died shortly before his marriage to Jane. Jane's mother and siblings travel from Scotland to Canada around this same time.[6]
1861 James is listed as head of household with his wife and their three sons. His occupation is listed as Farmer. Their home is in Innisfil, Simcoe, Canada West (Ontario).[5]
1871 James is listed as head of household with his wife and their six children. Their home is in Vespra, Simcoe, Ontario.[7]
1881 James age 52 is head of household with his wife and their nine children. Their home is Vespra, Simcoe, Ontario.[8]
1890 James Kirkup dies on Oct. 26, 1890 in Simcoe, Ontario.[9] James and his wife Jane are buried at Christ Church Anglican Cemetery in Simcoe, Ontario.[10]
