Biography

William Richardson son of James Richardson and Margaret Mabon ^[1]

Born 28 Feb 1796

This may or may not have been at Morebattle, Roxburghshire, Scotland as the date comes from a bulk set of births/ baptisms for James and Margaret's children in the Morebattle Secession church register around 1802 ^[2]

William himself believes he was born about 1795 at Bowden ^[3], but that could be where he grew up later. Certainly his brother lived there for a time, and his mother may have been born there.

Unfortunately, the dancing master William moved to England and died there, so we don't have the benefit of an informative Scottish death cert. to confirm or deny his parents.

Paternal relationship is confirmed through Y-chromosome DNA testing. W Tim (RC-4) and Dave (RC-5) match on 109 out of 111 markers (see FTDNA Richardson project and DNASurnames link below) and all bar two named variants out of some 33,600 from a BigY test, thereby confirming their direct paternal lines back to their MRCA James Richardson.

Bowden RICHARDSON baptisms consist of a grand total of 3:

- Mary in 1760 to a George;

- Christian in 1763 to a Henry & Christian (TROTTER);

- James in 1823 to John RICHARDSON & Isabel ANDERSON,

this latter John being the son of James & Margaret (MABON) RICHARDSON whose other children were born in Earlston.

As Christian's parents appear to be a William and Margaret, and we don't appear to have a 2nd daughter to gain a hint of William's mother's name from the Scottish naming pattern, either William's father was also a William, or there's an earlier child we don't yet know about or they didn't follow the naming pattern.^{[11][12][13][14]}
