Wedding description[4]

The Northern Champion (Taree, NSW) - Saturday 14 May 1921 - page 3

Orange Blossoms

An exceptionally interesting wedding ceremony eventuated on Tuesday evening last in the Salvation Army Hall, Taree, when Captain Ford joined together in the holy bonds of matrimony Miss Veda Young, only daughter of Mrs. I. Young, and the late Mr. J. F. Young of Albert Street, Taree, and Arthur Vernon Drury, son of Cr. C. E. Drury and Mrs. Drury, of Glenthorne.

The young couple are well known in Taree, consequently the hall was filled to overflowing with interested spectators and well wishers. A small platform had been erected for the occasion in front of the rostrum. It was tastefully draped and overhead hung a large white bell decorated with blue violets. On the platform stood the bride and bridegroom, and the Taree S.A. Silver Band, under Bandmaster Armitage, occupied the stage. Before and after the ceremoney prayers were offered. Accompanied by the fine band the congregation sang the hym, "She's the Lily of the Valley." Before the ceremony the band also played "The Colors March". After the articles of marriage were read Captain Ford "tied" the eventful "knot", the responses "I will" being distinctly audible. Then the Sergeant Major pulled a cord and the big white bell hanging above opened and the happy couple and those standing near were enveloped in a shower of confetti.

As the bride and bridegroom marched down the hall the band played "Some day I'll see His blessed face" and the audience lustily sang the words. The bride was dressed in the Army uniform, and wore a white sash, caught with orange blossoms on the right shoulder, and tied below the waist on the left. The bride was attended by her cousin, Miss Lucy Hopper, as bridesmaid. She was also in uniform and wore a white sash. The bridegroom was in bandsman's uniform and his brother, Mr. Reg Drury was best man.

After the ceremony 35 guests attended the wedding breakfast at the home of Miss Young in Albert Street. Captain Ford presided and the guests included Messrs. C. E. Drury, S. T. Lean, Armitage; Mesdames Young and Hopper and Miss Clarence Drury, all of whom spoke, and Mr. and Mrs. Drury and their parents were the recipients of many well deserved compliments and good wishes. The bride and bridegroom both expressed their thanks. The wedding presents, which made a fine array, were greatly admired, and included a fine assortment of silver and china ware and several cheques.

At the conclusion of the breakfast the company sang "Praise God from Whom all blessings flow," and the happy couple left for Sydney by the midnight train en route for the Jenolan Caves, where the honeymoon will be spent. The bride's travelling costume was navy blue with hat to match. Mr. and Mrs. Drury will settle down at Glenthorne.
