OUR FIGHTING FORCES. There was a very happy gathering at the school hall, Glenthorne, on Saturday evening last, when the Glenthorne and Purfleet friends of Mr. Ivan Drury (twin son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Drury) met to entertain him prior to his departure to join up with the A.I.F. The guest was a student at the Armidale Teachers' Training College when he decided to get into the uniform. Mr. Walter Muscio presided. The interior of the hall was very nicely decorated and the evening was spent in community singing, games and competitions. During a break in the proceedings the chairman and others spoke in glowing terms of the soldier guest. The speakers included the chairman, Messrs. Jack McKay and H. Nixon, and Miss Florrie Trotter. Miss Maisie Muscio presented Ivan with a writing case, which the recipient acknowledged in a nice little speech. He thanked all of his friends for the happy evening they had arranged for him, which also gave him a chance to meet his friends before going into camp. A very dainty supper was served by the ladies, after which Auld Lang Syne and the National Anthem were sung. Ivan left for camp by train on Monday night. |
