Biography

Clara Bernice Wilcox was born on 9 Aug. 1913 at Sandgate, Bennington County, Vermont, USA.[1] She appeared on the census of 9 Jan. 1920 in the household of her parents, Willie Ozial Wilcox and Addie (Morey) Wilcox, at Sandgate, Bennington Co., Vermont.[2]

She married James McClintock Edgerton, son of Albert R. Edgerton and Elva (Buck) Edgerton, on 12 Sep. 1928 at East Arlington, Bennington County, Vermont.[3]

She and James appeared on the census of 24 April 1930 at Arlington, Bennington County, Vermont.[4]

Clara died on 22 March 2007 at North Bennington, Bennington County, Vermont,[5] at age 93 and was buried at West Arlington Cemetery, Arlington, Bennington County, Vermont.[6] Her memorial has a photo of her headstone and links to those of many family members.[7]

Clara Bernice Edgerton
Clara Bernice W. Edgerton, a model for the artist Norman Rockwell and a currier for the Rockwell family, died on Thursday evening, March 22, 2007, at The Prospect Nursing Home in North Bennington, Vt. She was 93.
She was the mother of four children, including Joy Freisatz of Altamont.
A long-time resident of West Arlington, Vt., Mrs. Edgerton was born in Sandgate on Aug. 9, 1913. She was the last surviving child of the late Willie O. and Addie (Morey) Wilcox. She attended schools in Sandgate and West Arlington.
She was married in East Arlington on Sept. 12, 1928 to James M. Edgerton. Mr. Edgerton died on March 19, 1979.
Throughout her life she enjoyed being in the out of doors, especially gardening, hunting and fishing, her family wrote in a tribute. "She will be remembered as a wonderful cook," they said.
Mrs. Edgerton was a long-time member and supporter of the Chapel on the Green in West Arlington, a member of the Battenkill Grange for more than 50 years and had owned and operated The Covered Bridge Antique Shop also in West Arlington.
Mrs. Edgerton is survived by her son James A. "Bud" Edgerton of South Burlington; three daughters, Edith Zindle, of Albany, Joy Freisatz of Altamont, and Ardis Clark of Ocala, Fla. and Ludlow; seven grandchildren — Marshall Clark, Miner Clark, Brenda Clark, Jim Edgerton, Deborah Joy Edgerton, Karen Freisatz White and Peter Freisatz; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her husband, her five brothers died before her — Orin Wilcox, Kenneth Wilcox, James Wilcox, Cecil Wilcox and Carroll Wilcox — as did her six sisters — Elva Morrison, Nina Crandall, Annis Heaney, Doris Wilcox, Elizabeth Hess, and Dora Belle Wilcox.
A funeral service was held on March 25, at the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, with Rev. Jane Buswell presiding. Burial will take place in the Edgerton family lot in the West Arlington Cemetery later in the spring.
