Biography

Jamestown Church Tower
Thomas Whitley was a Jamestown colonist.

Thomas Whitley/Wheatly is estimated to have been born about 1584 in England. His parents are at this time unconfirmed.

Thomas Whitley was an investor of the Second Virginia Charter, 23 May 1609.[1] [2] He was appointed to several Committees of the Virginia Company in London. We have records of some appointments beginning 28 April 1619. The first named Committee he was appointed to was "for the constituting of Lawes and setling of a forme of Governemt over all Virginia...."[3] Following the "Indian Massacre of 1622," a Committee was appointed "to consider what power and authority may be graunted by the Companie to the survivinge frends of Such as are slaine, ... to administer upon the goods lefte unto them, and what course may best be taken for recovery and preservacon of all such goods ..." Thomas Wheatly was appointed to this Committee on 17 July 1622. Wheatly was not a survivor of the "Massacre" since he was not in Virginia.[4]

Although Wheatley/Whitley was an investor in the Virginia Company, he was not a settler or planter and never went to Virginia Colony. At a Meeting of the Generall Court for Virginia 18 July 1620, Thomas Wheatley is shown to have paid in as his investment £87, 10s. As of 30 January 1621/22, Wheatley owned five shares in the Company and, since his investment was more than £50, he was exempt from paying rent to the Company for any persons transported by him.[5]

Research Notes

  • Needs Relationship Review: Sources needed for parents, wife and children linked to this profile. As of this date, no records have been found confirming the relationships. Strutton-11 16:56, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

Maintenance category of "needs Relationship Review" added to US Southern Colonist Sticker can be removed once sources and/or biography are added. Strutton-11 16:56, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

Very little is known of Whitley's family, wife or children. Research should be done to confirm the wife and children linked to this profile are accurate. For example, Mary Whitley, born 1582 in Dublin, Ireland, is definitely not his daughter. She was born two years before Thomas and is being removed as daughter. (Strutton-11 16:49, 27 June 2022 (UTC))

Thomas Whitely/Wheatley was never in Virginia Colony. He was not a settler or planter. He was an investor and member of the Virginia Company of London. No records have been found to place him in Virginia and he did not die there. It is assumed he lived and died in England. Please keep this in mind and do not attempt to locate him in Virginia. Mary Whitley was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1582, 2 years before her purported father. Since there is no possibility Mary was daughter of Thomas Whitley, she has been unlinked.
Are you sure that Thomas Whitley died in Virginia.? He is not listed in the Jamestown Muster, Nor Virginia Migrants and Adventurers 1607-1635 (Martha McCartney) nor The Complete Book of Immigrants 1607-1660, Peter Wilson Goldham.

Also I know of no family Farrar, living in SW England, Either Somerset, Gloucestershire or neighboring counties.

I've investigated this family in depth. There are three lines, The Yorkshire (northern), Norfolk (eastern( and midland Farrar's, all three belong to different haplogroups. But no Southwest Farrars.

Nor is the Farrar family found in any Visitation of Somerset. An Ann Farrar of Norwich, Norfolk, is found in the Visitation of Gloucester, 1623 married John Carr
