Biography

Sarah (Waters) Pidwell was born in Cornwall, England.

Sarah was born about 1834. It seems that the names "Sally" and "Sarah" were used interchangeably. A Sally Waters was baptised in Tywardreath, Cornwall, on the 25th of January, 1835. Location is uncertain because all other events happen in Fowey. Parents were Sampson and Sally ^[1][2][3].

In 1841 she was living in Fowey with her aunt and uncle Betsy, cousins Elizabeth, Catherine and Jane Howard, her grandparents Colliver and Betsy Sweet, her mother Sally and brother Sampson. She is listed as Sally Waters on the census, aged 6. The location of her father is unknown^[4].

In 1851 she was living in Fowey with her aunt Betsey Howard and uncle Randal Howard, together with her brothers and sister^[3]. Her parents had both died in the mid 1840s (see their entries above).

She migrated to South Australia in about 1858^[2]. She married William Pidwell at Kooringa in South Australia on the 27th of August 1859^[5] and had her first child in 1860 ^[6].

In about 1867 her family moved to Victoria^[2].

She passed away at Pleasant Creek Victoria in 1881 from cerebral apoplexy. On her death registration four children were noted - Eliza, Ethelinda, Edgar and William^[2].

Research Notes

Supporting that Sally and Sarah are the same person is the 1851 English census. This records Randal Howard and Betsey Howard living in Fowey, Cornwall with a niece and three nephews - Sampson, Sidwell and Joseph Sweet Walters. Sampson/Samson Waters and Sally Sweet were married in 1834 by Banns in Fowey. There is a baptisms record for Sampson/Samson Waters, born to Samson/Sampson and Sally in both 1837 and 1838 in Tywardreath. Sidwell Waters was baptised on March 1843 in Tywardreath and was probably living in 1881 in Hove Sussex with her husband George Tewkesbury. Finally Joseph Sweet Waters married in 1873 in Kadina South Australia; his father is listed as Sampson Walters. He died in 1886 in South Australia. All of this is not certain as there are no baptism records for Joseph Waters and the names do not exactly match.

On her death registration she is recorded as having lived in South Australia for 9 years and Victoria for 15 years. This gives the estimates for emigration to South Australia and then moving to Victoria a few years later. Her birthplace was Cornwall. Her husband was recorded as William Pidwell, married in Kooringa South Australia, 25 years previously^[2].

I only have DNA evidence of a connection back to Sarah Waters through her other daughter Ethelinda.
