Biography

Sidwell (Waters) Tewkesbury was born in Cornwall, England.

Sidwell was born about 1843; probably in Fowey Cornwall. She was a daughter of Sampson Waters and Sally Sweet. Baptism was performed on the 23rd of March 1843 in Tywardreath^[1][2].

In 1861 she was living as an unmarried servant in Tywardreath in the household of Hugh C. Trevanion; the son of a disgraced English nobleman^[3].

In 1864 she had a child, Richard Meredith Waters, while as a single woman. The baby was christened in Fowey on the 29th of May 1864^[4].

She has not yet been found in the 1871 census. Richard Waters was living as a boarder in Fowey at the time.

In 1874 she married Alfred George Tewkesbury, a labourer, in Bristol^[5]. They would go on to have at least two children.

In 1881 she was living with George Tewkesbury, her son Richard (now called Tewkesbury), and two children George and Lily in Hove, Sussex^[6].

In 1891 Richard had left home but the other members of her family were still living with her in Hove^[7].

By 1901 her husband had died. She was living in Aldrington with her children George and Lily^[8].

Finally in the 1911 census she was again living in Hove with her daughter Lily Goodwins^[9]. The census records her as a widow, working as a laundress.

She died on the 25th of January 1926. Probate was completed on the 25th of February the same year^[10].
