Biography

George Walton, son of George and Catherine Walton, was christened 18 March 1682/83, St. Andrews parish...

  • Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England.[1][2]
  • Brunswick County, Virginia[3]

He married Elizabeth S. (Rowe) Walton in 1704, King William, Brunswick, Virginia.[4]

Public Records at Richmond, Virginia

George Walton was one of the gentlemen named in the Commission of the Peace as "Kings Justice Gentlemen," and he qualified as such at the first Court held in Brunswick Co VA, 11 May 1732.
At a court held the 7th of November 1734, he had the oath of High Sheriff administered to him. At a court held June 5th, 1746, he had the oath of Judge of the County Court in Chancery administered to him and took his seat upon the bench. At a court held August, 1748, he qualified as Captain of Infantry.
In Book II, pages 511 and 512, land grants in Brunswick county, Virginia, I find three grants made in the year 1726 to George Walton, for 365 acres. 318 acres and 190 acres. In Bishop Meade's Churches, page 487, I find the names of Thomas Lanier and George Walton, Vestrymen in Cumberland Parish, Lunenburg County (cut off from Brunswick County in 1745). This clearly identifies George Walton, the father of Catherine Walton, who married Nathan Harris.[5]

The Walton Family Graveyard is presently located just off Route 670 (Western Mill Rd.)about 1/4 mile from the intersection with Route 611(Dry Bread Rd.)in Brunswick Co.Va.The cemetery sits adjacent the George Walton house site, once a grand brick mansion, the graves located just beyond the homes back entrance. VA. on Meherrin River, Rattle Snake Creek, and Quarrel Swamp, acquired between 1726 and 1761(Dennis Stewart 16676).

Research Notes

Disputed children: This George Walton and his wife Elizabeth Rowe had four known children, as named in his will: John Walton, Mary Ledbetter, Catherine Harris, and Isaac Rowe Walton. In his itemized will, between Mary and Catherine, George Walton leaves to Adam Simms, Jr. one shilling sterling. This is the husband of their deceased daughter Elizabeth, according to a note by R.W.B. They are not known to have had a daughter named Martha. However, Elizabeth (Rowe) Walton's will names Simms grandchildren, which could be explained by either George not naming his grandchildren in his will or he did not name another daughter who married a Simms, neither likely. It appears that George Sims married Martha (1710-1772) - daughter, maybe of another George Walton (maybe Walton-3804). Their son Adam Sims married Elizabeth Walton, daughter of this George Walton & his wife Elizabeth.[20]

Brunswick History

The first English settlers in Brunswick county swarmed into the lands near Fort Christanna during its 4 years of operation (1714–1718). Brunswick County was established in 1720 from Prince George County. In 1732 the county received more land from parts of Surry and Isle of Wight counties. The county is named for the former Duchy of Brunswick-Lunenburg in Germany, because one of the titles also carried by Britain's Hanoverian kings was Duke of Brunswick-Lunenburg. Brunswick County is bisected by Interstate 85, U.S. 1 and U.S. Highway 58, and is mostly rural with an economy based on lumber, tobacco, and other farm crops. Cotton is grown in the far south. The county contains the small Saint Paul's College, Virginia, as well as a campus of Southside Virginia Community College. Fort Pickett Army National Guard base is partly in the County.[21]
Isaac Rowe Walton SR was Burgess for Brunswick in 1761-1765 as well as being listed in the book "Virginia's Colonial Soldiers”: By, Lloyd DeWitt Bockstruck. On page 9 for Brunswick County, Virginia, conflict dates of: 23 Mar 1756 & 22 May 1759 & 25 Jun 1759; in each he is listed as Captain. However, there are listings for a Lieutenant Isaac Rowe Walton, 06 Apr 1749 & 28 Aug 1753; so I am assuming that he was promoted sometime between 1753 & 1756 from Lieutenant to Captain. (I do not know my military ranking very well.) Also listed are his father, Captain George James Walton 04 Sep 1746 and his involvement in a conflict as well. The name of Rowe which was Elizabeth Scott ROWE WALTON 1685 – 1775, his mother's maiden name, is often spelled simply "Row".

With respect to the Sims mentioned as grandchildren in Elizabeth Walton's will, namely: George, Sarah, and Isaac Row Sims, it is likely they were born sometime between 1754 and 1767. Their mother (unnamed), it can be assumed, was deceased by the time of George's will. Their grandmother notes they are to receive their inheritance from her upon reaching the age of 21, indicating they were believed by her to yet be under 21 at the time of her will. This information places their births between, roughly, 1754 and 1767, which would also indicate the unnamed daughter would have died sometime within that span of time. The need for George to mention Adam Sims Jr. in his will was likely to prevent him from pursuing anything further from the family legally. As such, to have cause for claim enough for George to be concerned with, and sharing the surname "Sims", he is likely either the father of the children, or the surviving Sims relative the care of the grandchildren was entrusted to if their father was also deceased. (As previously mentioned, the use of "Jr" and "Sr" at that time did not necessarily indicate a father and son, but rather was used to differentiate two people of the same name from the same family living simultaneously, much like "Adam the elder", and "Adam the younger".) I think it would be reasonable to conclude then minimally that George's wife had an unnamed daughter, who married a "Sims", that died and left the three grandchildren named in her will, but I would not necessarily assume this unnamed daughter was George's child.

For those interested in this line, I have recently discovered that a good deal of information on George and his descendants may be found in the book "The Wallton's of Brunswick County Virginia: Descendants of George and Elizabeth Walton", authored by Joe Clifford Tinney. It appears to be out of print currently, but may be accessible here:

going through changes, trying to sort out what information came from where, I stumbled upon something of interest:

birth location: St. Andrews Parish, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England

went with birth (baptism?) date: 24 Oct 1647

(both from Ancestry's "England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975")

(found at this change detail)

possible Virginia parishes include Lawnes Creek & Meherrin (in addition to St Andrew's Parish). From Parishes of Virginia:
  • Lawnes Creek Parish (formed 1640) served "James City Co to 1652, Surry Co to 1738. When Surry Co was formed in 1652, the parish went too."
  • Meherrin Parish (formed 1753) served "Brunswick Co to aft 1785, Greensville Co to aft 1785. After Greensville Co was formed from Brunswick in 1780, Meherrin Parish served both counties."
  • St. Andrew's Parish (formed 1720) served "Brunswick Co to aft 1785, Greensville Co to aft 1785. Formed by an act of 1720, with Brunswick Co. The Act drafted in 1720, was not passed until 1732. After Greensville Co was formed from Brunswick, in 1781 it served both counties."

It seems this George is Surry County/Brunswick County. Marth (m Sims) is probably New Kent/Hanover counties.

Any objection if I detach Martha as his daughter? Any thoughts on who she should be attached to? (I hate to just cut her adrift, although she is attached to husband George Sims.)

Kerns' book (FamilySearch; see page 470/501 in digital copy) shows that Elizabeth Walton who married Adam Sims was born 1723 & died 1764 (daughter of George & Elizabeth Walton). This would account for the Adam Sims named in George's will. And the minor bequest supports Kerns' book, which shows no children for Adam & Elizabeth (Walton) Sims.

The book has a chapter on Edward Walton of Hanover County with connections to Sims & Baker families. This is more likely the family that Martha belongs to.

I've edited the profile back to born England with March 1683 christening date. Link given in reply to my query (this page) agrees with March 1683 christening in England & also has the specific death date (in Oct 1766) that Tobler does. That leaves Ancestry as source for Not sure what the source is for 18 June 1680 birth date (in Brunswick, Isle of Wight County, Virginia), so I left it out of profile.

I'm still curious for sources showing his name to be "George James" (preferred or otherwise - will has only George Walton). It came from Tobler, but he gave no sources on his website (now unavailble through Rootsweb... probably accessible through archive.org's WayBack Machine).

Cheers, Liz

Hi! Roger just corrected "USA too early" for birth and death locations (Thanks Roger!), BUT...

The birth info was changed from St. Andrews Parish, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England and "before 18 Mach 1683" (date of christening) to 18 Jun 1680 (marked certain) in Brunswick, Isle of Wight County, Virginia, USA.

Sources?

Also "Sr" was added as suffix (marked guess) with no explanation. If no objection, I'll remove it (nothing indicates he used it).

And if there's not a source for birth date/location, I'll put it back to England/before christening date.

Thanks!

It is my understanding that "Sr." and "Jr." had a slightly different usage in George's time. It was used to differentiate two people of the same name of the same family living simultaneously, but who are not necessarily father and son. George's son John had a son named George who was referred to in some documents as "George Jr." which has led to some confusion because of the change to the usage of these suffixes over time.

On a similar note, John's sons, as listed in his will, were George and Thomas. Given that George intended that the land he was giving to John was to be passed on to John's heirs someday, I believe the section of George's will where he mentions the land to be given John, that the "George Walton Jr." and "Thomas Walton" mentioned are likely John's two sons, but this is speculation on my own part at this juncture.

I restored profile from latest change. See this page for info added by gedcom import, which included baptism in 1823 and arrival in 1719.

The imported information appeared to include information for two different men - in addition to baptism in 1823, the George Walton who was resident of Wythe County had apparently been a soldier in the War Between the States.
