Biography

Birth and Parents

Edmund Sutton (or Dudley), Knt., was the son and heir apparent of John Sutton (or Dudley), K.G., 1st Lord Dudley, and Elizabeth Berkeley.[1][2][3][4] His date of birth is unknown and is estimated.

Marriage and Children

Edmund married first to Joyce Tiptoft,[4] third daughter of Sir John Tiptoft, 1st Lord Tiptoft and Powis, and his second wife, Joyce Cherleton.[1][5] They had two sons and one daughter:
  • Edward,[4][5] K.G., K.B., 2nd Lord Dudley, his grandfather's heir, was born c.1459, died intestate 31 January 1531/2, married Cecily Willoughby and had issue[1][3]
  • John,[4] Esq., of Aston-le Walls, Northamptonshire, married Anne Clarell[1][5][6]
  • Joyce, wife of Sir Edward Benstead[1]
Edmund married second to Maud Clifford, widow of John Harington, Knt., of Hornby, Lancashire, and daughter of Thomas Clifford, 8th Lord Clifford and Joan (or Jane) Dacre.[1][4][5] The couple likely married before 1461, as their daughter Dorothy was thought to have been born by 1462.[7] They had seven sons and four daughters:
  • Oliver,[1] died without issue[4][5]
  • John,[1] died without issue[4][5]
  • Robert, Esq., Steward of the lordship of Powys.[1] He was born about 1471, married twice, and died without issue before 28 May 1539, when his will was proved[5]
  • Walter,[1] died without issue[4][5]
  • Master Richard, D.Th., Precentor of Salisbury.[1] He was a priest, dying without issue,[4] his IPM was taken 20 October 1536[5]
  • Dr. George, a priest,[4] LL.D., Rector of Aston-le-Walls, Northamptonshire[1] where he was buried 6 January 1563[5]
  • Thomas, of Yanwath, Cumberlandshire,[1] married Grace Threlkeld[4] and had issue[5]
  • Margaret, married Sir John Musgrave,[1] (called Dorothy in Yorkshire Visitations)[4][8] as his second wife[5]
  • Dorothy, married Richard Wrottesley,[4] Esq., of Wrottesley, Staffordshire[1][5][9] and was likely born by 1462.[8] Visitations incorrectly show her as having first married John Musgrave.[4]
  • Jane, married Sir William Middleton[1][4] as his first wife, she died in 1500[5][10]
  • Alice, wife of Sir John Ratcliffe,[1][4] she left a will dated 31 March 1554 and proved the following July[5]
By an unknown mistress, Edmund had a bastard son, who was living in 1497 (name unknown).[1]

Life and Lands

Edmund held lands in Dudley, Staffordshire and Appletree and Aston-le-Walls, Northamptonshire.[1] He also inherited the moiety at Gatcombe [Hampshire][1] from his mother.[3]
In 1456, Edmund presented a rector to Aston-le-Walls, which had been gifted to him by his father.[5] In 1466 and 1475 he presented to the church of Aston-le-Walls.[1]
In 1467, he went to Ireland with his brother-in-law, John Tiptoft, Earl of Worcester.[1][5] Dugdale states that Edmund was a knight by the time he went to Ireland, but he was styled as Edmund Dudley, Esquier in 1470, when he became Deputy Lieutenant to the Earl of Worcester.[5]
In 1473 Sir Edmund received the stewardship of the manor of Aberbury as compensation for his service in Ireland.[5] In 1483, he attended the Coronation of King Richard III.[1][5]

Death

Richardson states that Edmund's wife, Maud, was living in 1480/1.[1] Her date and place of death are unknown.
Edmund's exact date and place of death are unknown, but he was known to be living on 6 July 1483[3] (at the coronation of Richard III)[5] and died before a lawsuit dated 1485/6.[1] Edmund predeceased his father, John, who died 30 September 1487 and whose will was proved in February 1488.[1][3] Accordingly, Edmund's son, Edward, inherited from his grandfather.[5][11]

Research Notes

Visitations list as Margaret, wife of Edward Lord Powys as a daughter of Edmund:[4] this is not possible as she would have been his grandfather's sister.[5]
