Biography

Rose (Stoughton) Otis,[1] daughter of Anthony Stoughton and Agnes Pierce,[2] was born probably shortly before her baptism at Worplesdon, Surrey, England,[3][4] 22 November 1629.[2][3][4][5][6][7]

In 1643, the midst of the English Civil War, her widowed father sent her (at age 14) to New England with Israel Stoughton (said by Horatio Otis to be a kinsman, but see research notes below). Israel shortly returned to England to fight for the Parliamentarians, but died in 1644.[7][8] Who and where Rose was cared for before her marriage to Richard Otis is unknown, though Israel's wife, Elizabeth Knight, remained in New England, and his sister, Elizabeth (Stoughton) (Scudder) Chamberlain had also immigrated and was alive until 1647.

Rose died, probably at Dover, New Hampshire, before 3 July 1677 when her husband Richard Otis gave a bond of £500 as guardian to John Heard, heir to John and James Heard. Later that year, 5 November, the court approved Articles of Agreement to transfer executorship and administration of the will of John Heard to Richard Otis and James Chadborn. The record states, in part, "…Richard Otis, who being ye now husband of Shuah the Relict or Widdow of James Heard…."[6][9]

Marriage

She married Richard Otis, blacksmith,[2] probably at Boston, Massachusetts, about 1649. The estimated marriage date is based on her second son Stephen being born about 1652.[6] Richard was apparently in Dover, New Hampshire 20 October 1652 when he filed a complaint against Job Hawkins of Boston. See his profile for details. He was an inhabitant of Boston in May 1655, but by the end of that year the couple were in Dover, New Hampshire where he received a grant of land.[2][6]

Children

They had 4 sons and 4 daughters (in approximate order):

Research Notes

Immigration

Richardson states "They immigrated to New England," possibly implying they were married in England. That's possible, but there is no evidence of it in his sources.[2]

It is stated in several early published sources (and has been repeated many times since) that she came in 1643 with Israel Stoughton (see below).[5][7][14] Those three sources all cite a single source for Rose's ancestry and immigration to New England in 1643: her brother's manuscript on the Stoughton family, now held at the British Library.[15]

Alleged Kinsman, Israel Stoughton

None of the various accounts or pedigrees of the Stoughton families show Anthony and Israel Stoughton as in some way related. Most likely, when Horatio Otis wrote his 1851 account, the rationale was simply "the name's the same."[7] In his account, Ralph Stoughton makes no attempt to connect the two men.[8] At present it is mere speculation to attempt to answer how Anthony came to know Israel well enough to entrust his daughter to him, though it is quite possible they were related in some fashion for which evidence has not yet been found.

Rose Otis, alleged daughter of Richard Otis and Rose Stoughton and wife of Jean Poitevin

A previous version of this profile included an additional daughter, Rose, wife of Jean Poitevin.

  • Richardson says that the Rose of this profile had a daughter of the same name, a Rose who married Jean Poitevin. One of his two citations for Rose's entry is the Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire.[2] This says that Richard Otis had a daughter Rose who married Jean Poitevin, and that her mother may have been either the Rose of this profile or Richard's second wife Shuah Heard.[2][6]
  • William Otis's 1924 book on the Otis Family in America says that Richard Otis had a second marriage to Susanna Beard, by whom he had two children - Francoise Rose, who married Jean Poitevin at Beauport in 1696, and Jean-Baptiste, who attended the marriage of Francoise Rose.[12]
    • Richard Otis's second wife was Shuah Starbuck, widow of James Heard.[6][9] "Susanna Beard" may be a misreading of "Shuah Heard".
  • A 1921 work on the Otis family says that Richard Otis and "Anna Shuah (?)" had a son Jean-Baptiste, born in 1680, whose sister Françoise Rose married Jean Poitevin in 1696.[16]
  • Later research has found that the 29 October 1696 marriage contract of Rose Otis and Jean Poitevin clearly identifies Rose's parents as "Steeven Otis et Marie" - Stephen, son of the Rose of this profile, and Mary Pittman. Jean-Baptiste Otis was son of Richard Otis, another child of the Rose of this profile, and Susanna Hussey. Jean-Baptiste Otis and the Rose who married Jean Poitevin were therefore grandchildren of the Rose of this profile, and cousins, not siblings.[17][18][19]

This is one of my ancestors, and as much as I would like her to remain PGM, I can't see that there's any evidence supporting her arrival in New England by 1640 and suggest that the PGM management be removed.

Thank you M. I have removed her from the PGM project

I see Rose Stoughton has 2 brothers named Nicholas Stoughton. Stoughton-230 and Stoughton-426 need to be merged. Anthony Stoughton and Agnes Pierce had only one son named Nicholas.

Hi Chris, the problem is that a few printed genealogies of the OTIS family - those +100 years old genealogies often used as a source - are mixing 2 women: Rose being Martha married to John PINKHAM, and Rose who was a captive in Canada. We must absolutely use records (from primary sources when available) from both Québec and New England to sort out who's who.

I suggest to keep here information about Rose OTIS so that anyone is aware about the latest information about her. I will add information on Rose OTIS profile later. I also have additional information to add to Rose STOUGHTON's profile with sources from England.

If not their child, the information should likely be noted on Otis-224 and any details on the parents profiles (if children are listed), and not here.

In Children Section, the 29 October 1696 marriage contract by notary Jean Robert DUPRAC is about Rose OTIS and her husband Jean POITEVIN. I will make the change and I will add additional sources.

Jean-Baptiste Otis never attended the marriage of Françoise-Rose Otis at Beauport in 1696. He is not named on any documents related to this marriage.

Jean-Baptiste Otis was not the brother of Françoise-Rose Otis. He was the son of Richard Otis Jr and Suzanna Hussey, hence her first cousin. This is proven by his marriage contract to Cécile POULIN 1703-11-04 by notary Étienne Jacob whos says clearly his father "Richard Ohtis" is dead and mother "Anna Ohtis" is alive.

Rose OTIS, wife of Jean Poitevin, is not the daughter of Richard OTIS and Rose Stoughton. This is proven by their marriage contract 1696-10-29 by notary Jean Robert DUPRAC where it is clearly said Rose is the daughter of "Steeven Otis et Marie" (PITMAN).
