Report of the funeral in the Morning Post Monday 28 April 1884:
"First as Curate, and afterwards, Rector of St. Peter's, Walworth, since 1843. He was the third son of Edwyn Statham, of South Lambeth, and formerly of Nottingham. At a very early age he gained a reputation as a lecturer on science, and became a Fellow of the Geological Society and a contributor to numerous magazines and newspapers. He took interest in the Walworth Literary Institute, of which he was one of the vice-presidents, and other local institutions. On Easter Tuesday, April 15, 1884, he was attacked with bronchitis and inflammation of the lungs, to which he succumbed a week later. His funeral took place in the afternoon of Saturday, April 26, 1884. The first part of the service was performed at St. Peter's, Walworth, where his coffin brought from the rectory and placed in front of the altar. At least a thousand people lined the approach to the church, and a large number of parishioners filled the church. The Reverend S. P. H. Statham, assisted by the Reverend Sherrard Statham, of Birmingham, both sons of the late rector, officiated at St. Peter's and at the cemetery, a number of the local clergy and Nonconformist ministers also being present. The funeral procession was accompanied by the 4th Volunteer Battalion of the West Surrey Regiment, with its three bands, the drums being muffled, and a detachment of the P Division of Police, having been chaplain to both. The coffin was covered with the union jack. At the cemetery the remains were buried with military honours, the firing party being under Colonel A. W. Ray" [9].
