Events

1948 Michael George Manning was born on the 8 July 1948 at the Military Families Hospital, Moascar camp, Ismailia, Egypt as the second son of Robert Francis Manning and Dorothy Bertha Newman. Robert Francis was serving in the British Army and undertaking a tour of duty in Egypt after the Second World War. The birth occurred at the Command General Headquarters (GHQ), 2nd Echelon, Middle East Land Forces (MELF) of the British Army[1]. Birth Certificate

1950 Returned with the rest of the family from Egypt back to England. The family returned on the Empire Windrush sailing from Port Said, Egypt. Due to unrest in the local population about the British occupation of Egypt, the journey from Moascar to Port Said was accompanied by an armoured car[2].

1957 Migrated with the family from Southampton, England to Australia on the SS New Australia arriving in Fremantle, Western Australia on 30 January 1957 after a 6-week voyage. Due to the troubles around the Suez Canal, the ship travelled around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa stopping at Dakar, Senegal and Durban, South Africa. It then took two weeks to cross the Indian Ocean with the first sight of land being Fremantle.

Information on the SS New Australia including the travel conditions for new immigrants is available here. It was no luxury cruise with males and females separated and crammed into small cabins packed with bunk beds. The ship continued on to Melbourne where the family was met by Robert's cousin Victor Sheridan, and then to Sydney where the family disembarked. The last part of the trip was by diesel train sitting up overnight to Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
