Biography

Abner was born about 1783 in Dutchess County, New York in what was called Beekman's Patent and later Beekman District.

He was the oldest son of his father Rufus Spencer and his first wife Larina Briggs.

Abner is living in Denmark, Lewis County during 1810, 1820, 1830, and 1840 U.S. Censuses. [1] [2] [3] [4]. He served as a County Supervisor in 1821. He served in the New York State Assembly from 1 Jan 1823 to Apr 1824 representing Lewis County. [5] [6] Abner's wife, Hannah Macomber passed away in 1833. He committed suicide in the summer of 1848. [7][8]

  • Note from prior submitter: Archive Librarian at West Point Academy Calvin Fenton b1939, searched this family for 15 years, I have two letters from him, Calvin is proven 5th generation to Betsey Spencer 1835 Amsterdam, N.Y.-1921 Lewis County, N.Y. burial Liberty Cemetery, sibling to Celestine Spencer 1841-1907, Betsey and Celestine are daughters of Solomon 1807-1892 and Mary Spencer 1815-1882.

Betsey Spencer 1835-1921 married Alfred Joy 1834-1898 FAG Mem #69249031, and issued 10 children. Celestine Spencer 1841-1906 married William Haas 1840-1925 sibling Caroline Spencer Apr 1833 - bef 1890 married Oliver Halladay 1829-____ Sibling Viola Spencer 6 May 1847-bef.1880 married Alfred, Fred Duford 1847-1903, had child Minnie M. Duford 28 Jul 1875-28 Mar 1947 Ilion, Herkimer, New York Viola died from injuries from a horse and buggy accident, child Minnie was placed with her older sister Caroline Spencer Halladay, Caroline died and Minnie went to her Grandparents Solomon and Mary Spencer of Depauville, Jefferson, New York. Records are conflated at familysearch.org, process to repair is slow. Viola's horse and buggy accident is found in Genealogybank.com old newspapers, in copyright. Alfred, Fred Duford is a son of Joseph and Sopy Duford 1850 Federal Census, Clayton, Jefferson, New York.
