Biography

Allen Albert Spencer was born at Beekman, Dutchess, New York on 20 March 1791, [1] the son of Rufus Spencer and Larina Briggs. His mother died giving birth to him or shortly thereafter; and his father gave him to relatives to raise.

His father remarried and his second wife, Cynthia Christie, died after the birth of their fourth child. At that time, Rufus left Dutchess County intending to go to to Spencerville, Ontario, Canada which had been founded by his brother, Peleg; but he was stalled by severe winter weather in Lewis County, New York and falling in love with the countryside there - never left. Several stagecoach runs ran from Denmark to Ogdensburg, for sure, Rufus would take a trip and visit his relatives in Spencerville , about 25 miles from Ogdensburg.

Second wife was Cornelia's sister Cynthia, Cornelia was third wife and is recorded in Martinsburg, Lewis, New York, Cornelia had more children with Rufus Spencer who received land grant from Col. Walter Martin who purchased 8000 acres in Lewis County, from James Constable, brother of William Constable; Constableville, Lewis, New York is named in his honor, a village that was to be a copy of Paris, France. The Cheese plant in Constableville is famous for world class cottage cheese, and nearby Croghan famous for Croghan Bologna, come into our world early 1880s and record the facts. Thanks to Keith for excellence in recording family history.

Allen married Ruth Estella Sharp there in Dutchess County on 15 Jan 1813 after serving briefly in the War of 1812. [2] Allen and Ruth are in Barre, Genesee County for the 1820 Census. [3] When the 1830 Census was taken Barre was now in Orleans County, which was formed in 1824. [4] Before the 1840 Census was taken they had moved within Orleans County to the town of Kendall. [5]

Allen left his wife between the times the 1850 U.S. Census [6] and the 1855 New York State Census were taken. In the 1855 New York Census, Allen is living with their son, George, still in Kendall; [7] and Ruth is living with their daughter, Anna, also in Kendall. [8]

By the time the 1860 Census was taken, Allen had moved to Calhoun County, Michigan near his son Job.[9] After moving to Calhoun County, Allen married Betsey Carrington, the widow of John Woolever, at Albion in Calhoun County. [10] Allen passed away in Sheridan Township on 5 Oct 1867 [11] and was buried there in the Riverside Cemetery.[1]
