Biography

Maria Elisabetha Schnock was born Nov 6th, 1759 in Rehrersburg, Berks County, Pennsylvania, USA and christened Nov 18, 1759 at the Altalaha Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rehrersburg.^[1]

She lived with her husband Michael Reitz at his farm in Washington township, Northumberland, Pennsylvania. She is said to have made the trip from Berks county to Northumberland county on horseback. ^[2]

Her husband died in 1825, leaving her "the liberty in the house and cellar where I now live", noting, "if she don't licke [sic] to stay on the place aforesaid, she shall have the right to go to any of her children to live." ^[3] In the 1830 census, none of the Reitz households in Upper Manahoy contain a female age 70-80. ^[4] In 1840, the household of her son Michael Jr. contains a female aged 80-90. ^[5] In 1850, Elizabeth Reitz is listed in the household of her son Daniel, though her age is listed as 82 and not the expected ~91.^[6]

She died Dec 18, 1853 at the age of 94 and was buried alongside her husband in Himmel Church Cemetery, Rebuck, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. ^[7]

Research Notes

• She is variously reported with the given name Maria Elizabeth, Elizabeth, or Catherine and with the surname Schnock, Snope, or Schnope. She also appears as Rebuck, which may have been from an earlier marriage.
• In Genealogical and Biographical Annals of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, she is listed as being born in 1866, dying at the age of 87.^[8]
