Kathy (and others), I'm no Wikitree expert (!!) but even though Wikitree seems to have recursive sets of instructions on some matters, I haven't encountered an obvious, understandable method of handling names of men who were given saint names at baptism, like many of our German ancestors.

The difficulty exists in many places. For my immigrant ancestor, Johan George Reitz's baptism (at Bieber Evangelisch parish, Archion.de) was recorded as "Georg Henrich Reiz". His name at marriage (1744) was recorded "Johann Georg Reitz". An emigration record names him Johan Heinrich Reitz. The German researcher who located the Bieber records said all males baptized there (1709 - 1744) had the saint name Johan[n]. In American, his name was recorded at Himmels as either G. Reitz or G. Heinrich Reitz.

I believe the situation with Catharine Reitz's husband is similar. For example, "Hetrick Family History of Sandusky County Ohio" says "One of J. Nicholas Hetrick's sons was George Philip Hetrick who married Catharina Reitz" In another location it supplies "9. Johann (George) Philip Hetrick [16] (John Nicholas [1] was born on 23 Jul 1785 in Rebuck, Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania,17 died on 1 Mar 1853..."

Floyd’s Genealogical and Biographical Annals of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, in section pp. 563 - 587, reports "John Philip Hetrick, great-grandfather of John K. Hetrick, was born July 24, 1785, and died March 1, 1853 ... ...He and his wife, Catharine (Reitz), born Oct. 24, 1786, died June 25 l854..." (buried Himmels).

The record dates make it clear these refer to the same person even if the names differ in detail. So I hope there is a simple method and tutorial ("simple" = less than Five New Genealogy Terms Seldom Used Elsewhere) to describe a method that can address any combination of saint name, first and middle 'Christian' names.

I don't know a perfect solution. It concerns me that the most stringent of naming requirements may leave them separate forever. My sense is that genealogy would be better served by merging them, with notes describing naming differences, than leaving them as different people.

Reitz-477 and Reitz-286 are not ready to be merged because: husband and child don't match -- these need to be resolved. Also, personal memory may be unreliable ...
