Biography

Jacob Reitz was born circa 1780 - 1782, most likely in or near Upper Mahanoy Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Andreas Reitz and Maria-Margaretha Brosius.

Jacob Reitz was married to Anna Maria Hepler circa 1802.[1][2] The couple were parents of eleven children who lived to adulthood.

Jacob Reitz may have served as a private with Hamilton's Rifle Regiment of Pennsylvania Militia during the War of 1812.[3] A bit more research is needed to confirm this service.

Jacob Reitz and his family were still living in Upper Mahanoy Township at the 1830 Census.[4]

In 1836, the part of Upper Mahanoy Township that Jacob Reitz lived in was renamed Jackson Township.

Jacob Reitz died in 1838.[5] He is buried at the Saint Peters Lutheran Church Cemetery in Red Cross, Pennsylvania.

The Will of Jacob Reitz was presented to the Northumberland County Court on October 6, 1838.[6] He named his wife as his sole beneficiary. He did specify that he had eleven children in his will. Benjamin and Daniel, who were named Executors of the estate, were the only children named in the will. Unfortunately, Benjamin Reitz predeceased his father, so was unable to serve.

In 1841, the Estate Distribution of Jacob Reitz was completed.[7] All of the surviving heirs were specifically named in the Jacob Reitz Estate Deed Transfer. This can be found in Deed Book CC, page 42 of the Northumberland County, Pennsylvania Land Records at the Family History Library. Here is that document:

Jacob's date of birth presents a challenge. Postulating 1782 creates an issue with his sister, Mary Elizabeth Reitz (Wrights) Brosier's birth date, thought to be Feb. 18, 1782.

Together with a few other family genealogists, we made a rubbing of Jacob's tombstone around 2016. It confirms the tombstone date of birth is 1780.
