About the Surname

There are a few possible origins of the surname Allen. The most likely origins are both from the Celtic languages. The first idea is from the Scottish Gaelic and Irish ‘’’’ailin’’’’ meaning “little rock” or “stone” [1] [2] (in which case the surname would have originally referred to a man who lives by, or under, a large rock or boulder). The other possibility would come from the Celtic ‘’’’Alluin’’’’ meaning “handsome”. [1] Variants include:

Hi, I'm trying to research my mother's paternal heritage, which was never discussed. Her Father was William Thomas Allen, her grandfather was Arthur Allen and her grandmother was Rose Johnson?? both born and died in England. My grandfather was born in London and served in the "old contemptibles" in WW1 and then immigrated to Australia. From all accounts, he never kept in contact with his family. I believe Arthur Allen was a school teacher in London. I don't know if my grandfather had any siblings.

I am an Allen decended from Samuel Allen of East Windsor, CT. He died in 1648. He was an ancestor of Gen. Ethan Allen of Vermont. My family has a direct line from Samuel. It is not known how or when Samuel came to the colonies. It's a brick wall. Family lore has him born in 2588 in Chelmsford, Essex, Britain but this cannot be proved. It is also possible he came to the colonies on the John and Mary, but again cannot be proved. Upon Samuel's death his widow remarried and moved with the minor children to Northampton, MA. One of the descendants, John Allen, from whom I am decended, died in the Battle of Bloody Brook during King Philip's War. His widow and children went back to Northampton from Deerfield before the Deerfield Massacre. So, my branch of Allen's are from New England..

Hi, I am Mary Louise Allen and my Allen tree goes back to Samuel Allen of East Windsor CT. He died in 1648. I have my family Gedcom. My brick wall has been finding out when & how Samuel came to the colonies so I can get a firm trace on his origins in England. We have some family stories about where Samuel was from in England, but nothing ive been able to document. Would you like my "branch" of New England Allen info?

Is there anyway a copy of my GEDCOM can be helpful to your project. I could email it and you can combine in FamilySearch or other tool that will allow to to update wikitree. I will continue to follow you on wikitree because what you are doing is important.

Hello,

My name is Kelly Allen, I've been working on family history for 20 years off and on. New to wikitree. Most of my records are on PAF. I need to upload to gedcom file. I have some info in familysearch. I have DNA info from FamilyTreeDNA. Big Y.

I have sourced my Allen tree from myself back to Richard Allen and Nancy Jackson which immigrated from Armagh/Loughgall area, Northern Irealnd about 1819. They immigrated to Eastern Ontario, Canada. Most of the family stayed in the Vankleek Hill area, Ontario, Canada. One Allen went West to Calgary, Alberta and down into Washington State. I have some knowledge of (PRONI) Public records of Northern Ireland.

Anything I can do to help.

Kelly Allen
