Biography

Childhood

Anna Brita Petersdotter was born on a soldier's farm in Norra Hult, Burseryd Parish, Jönköping County, Sweden, 18 Feb 1822.[1] She was the third of the six children of Peter (Johansson) Mörk and Catharina Magnusdotter.[1] She and her family remained on the soldier's farm in Norra Hult until 1838.[2] During that time, Anna Brita's parents had three more daughters: Ingrid Sara in 1825,[3] Maja in 1828,[4] and, in 1834, when her mother was 46 years old, Johanna.[5] In 1832, Anna Brita's eldest sibling, Margareta, left home, at about age 16, bound for a place within Burseryd Parish called Stommen.[6] Two years later, her elder brother, Elias, also left home, also about age 16.[7] In 1838, Anna Brita's parents were apparently too poor to remain on the soldier's farm in Norra Hult, and so that year they, Anna Brita, and Anna Brita's sisters (Ingrid Sara, Maja and Johanna) removed to some unspecified place within Burseryd parish,[8] supported, likely, by the church.[9]

Early Adulthood

In 1839, Anna Brita's parents and her sisters moved within Burseryd Parish to a place called "Ö," apparently residing there in "Damsnäs" cottage.[8] But that year, at about age 16, Anna Brita moved out, on her own, ending up in Mölnatången, in nearby Gryteryd Parish.[10] In 1840, still alone, she moved again, this time to Stora Nädhult in nearby Kinnared Parish, remaining there until 30 Nov 1841, on which day she returned to Burseryd parish.[11] Where she went when she returned to Burseryd parish isn't known because records there for this period are unavailable. But what is known is that, 15 Nov 1843, when she was age 21, and still alone, she moved from Burseryd parish to Norra Släthult in Villstad Parish.[12] Anna Brita remained in Norra Släthult until 1846,[13] when she married.

Marriage

At age 24, Anna Brita married 21 year-old Harald Ivar in Villstad parish, 22 Nov 1846.[14] They settled on a soldier's farm in Trehörnahult, Villstad parish, and they resided there in all but one of the years they were married.[15] They had seven children. Six were born on the soldier's farm in Trehörnahult, but, tragically, only four lived beyond age three.

Children

Anna and Harald had their first two children on the soldier's farm in Trehörnahult. They had there a daughter, Josephina (Josephine), who was born 17 Dec 1846,[16] and then a son, Mårten, who was born 16 May 1849.[17] In 1849, Anna and Harald moved within the parish to Isberga Lillegård, where, 2 Dec 1850, they had a daughter, Maria.[18] They returned to the soldier's farm in Trehörnahult later in 1850, and there had a son, Johan, 22 Oct 1852,[19] but who drowned, 1 Sep 1854,[19] just before his second birthday and just weeks before the birth of their daughter, Inga, 26 Sep 1854.[20] They remained on the soldier's farm in Trehörnahult, where, 24 Nov 1856, they had another daughter, whom they named Emma.[21]

Death in Childbirth

Emma died of whooping cough, 27 Jan 1857, at two months of age.[21] Shortly after her death, Anna and Harald were expecting the last of their seven children. But from complications from giving birth on the soldier's farm in Trehörnahult to that unnamed, stillborn child,[22] Anna died, 8 Nov 1857, at age 35.[23] She was survived by her husband, Harald (who died in Vipperhult, Villstad parish, 29 Dec 1890, age 65),[24] and four children: her daughter, Josephine (who emigrated to the United States and died in Bermen Township, Cook County, Illinios, 4 Sep 1923, age 76),[16] her son, Mårten (who died in Berghem parish, Älvsborg county, Sweden, 18 Jan 1868, age 18),[17] her daughter, Maria (who emigrated to the United States and died in or after 1910),[18] and her daughter, Inga (who died in Käringebacka, Villstad parish, 24 Sep 1922, age 77).[20]

The record reflects that Anna Brita left for "Gryteryd" (i.e., Gryteryd parish) in 1839 and the rest of the family removed in 1839 to a place within the parish called "Ö." The term "utan hemvist" means "without domicile" and means (as discussed elsewhere in this profile) that they lacked their own funds or relatives who would house them and so had to move around among parish farms, on a pre-arranged schedule, with their subsistence paid by the church. When Swedish census records indicate someone lives "sockens slut" (end of the parish), "utan bestämd hemvist" (without fixed domicile) or "utan hemvist" (without domicile), it means they lack their own funds or relatives who can or will house them and so that the person has to move around among parish farms, on a pre-arranged schedule, with their subsistence paid by the church.
