Biography

Childhood

Josephina Charlotta "Josephine" Haraldsdotter was born on a soldier's farm in Trehörnahult, Vilstad parish, Jönköping county, Sweden, 17 Dec 1846.[1] She was the first of the seven children of Harald Ivar and Anna Petersdotter.[1] Her parents resided on the soldier's farm in Trehörnahult in all but one of the years they were married.[2] After Josephina was born, they had there a son, Mårten, who was born 16 May 1849.[3] In 1849, they moved within the parish to Isberga Lillegård, where, 2 Dec 1850, they had a daughter, Maria.[4] They returned to the soldier's farm in Trehörnahult later in 1850, and there had a son, Johan, 22 Oct 1852,[5] but who drowned, 1 Sep 1854,[5] just before his second birthday and just weeks before the birth of their daughter, Inga, 26 Sep 1854.[6] They remained on the soldier's farm in Trehörnahult, where, 24 Nov 1856, they had another daughter, whom they named Emma.[7] The following year was another year of heartbreaking loss. When Josephina was ten, her infant sister, Emma, died of whooping cough, 27 Jan 1857.[7] Shortly after Emma's death, Josephina's parents were again expecting. But while giving birth, her mother died, 8 Nov 1857, at age 35,[8] and Josephina's seventh sibling came into the world, nameless and stillborn.[9]

Early Adulthood, Birth of Daughter

About a year later, Josephina's 33 year-old father married Magdalena Petersdotter, 31 Dec 1858.[10] They had a son, Anders, 25 Aug 1861,[11] and they continued residing on the soldier's farm in Trehörnahult through 1878.[12] As for Josephina, she continued to live on her father's farm through 1863, but in the last two years, only on-and-off. [13] Fourteen year-old Josephina first left home, bound for somewhere in Älvsborg county, 22 Oct 1861.[14] She returned home a little over a year later, 26 Nov 1862,[15] about eight months after her half-brother, Anders, died.[11] Her brother, Mårten, moved away from home, permanently, to Berghem parish, in Älvsborg county, 12 Mar 1863,[3] and then Josephina left home again, 19 Apr 1863, bound for Öxabäck parish, in Älvsborg county.[16] Josephina returned to her father's farm from Öxabäck parish, 24 Jun 1863.[17] She then left home permanently, moving to the City of Jönköping, about 50 miles northeast of Trehörnahult, 15 Oct 1863.[18] Until 1870, Josephine lived in Jönköping's western parish (västra församling), which since 1921 has been known as Sofia.[19] While living there, Josephine had, apparently by Carl Olsson, a daughter, Anna Sofia, 26 May 1866.[20]

Emigration to United States, Marriage

Josephine emigrated to the United States, from Göteborg, Sweden, 12 Nov 1870. There, between about 1870 and 1877, she married Lars John Nelson, but, apparently, they never had children.[21] In 1880, they may have resided in Bonne Homme, Howard County, Missouri.[22] Her father died in 1890.[23] Her father's will appears to indicate she was married and living at the time at 3303 Graves Place in Chicago, Illinois.[23] By 1900, they lived at 3224 Graves Place in Chicago.[24] They continued to live at 3224 Graves Place in Chicago as of 1910.[25]

Josephine passed away, 4 Sep 1923, in Bremen Township, Cook County, Illinois, age 76, and she's buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, just a few miles to the north of Bremen.[26]

Record says that Harald came from Isberga Lillegård in 1847 and Anna Brita from "No. Släthult" in 1847, and that their family of four moved to Isberga Lillegård in 1849. The record says Johannes and Maria were rejoined in 1843 by their daughter, "Christina" (born 5 Nov 1812), and, in 1844, by their son, "Carl" (born 5 Mar 1823). It says Christina left home again in 1845, and that Harald left in 1847 for a soldier's farm in Trehörnahult. In 1849, Carl and Anna Maria both left home in 1849, and Harald ("Sold.
