Biography

Childhood

Inga Petronella Haraldsdotter was born on a soldier's farm in Trehörnahult, Villstad Parish, Jönköping County, Sweden, 26 Sep 1854.[1] She was the fifth of the seven children of Harald Ivar and Anna Petersdotter.[1] Her parents resided on the soldier's farm in Trehörnahult in all but one of the years they were married.[2]

After Inga was born, her parents had a daughter, whom they named Emma, 24 Nov 1856.[3] The following year, when Inga was two, Emma died of whooping cough.[3] (Emma was the second child her parents lost. Just weeks before Inga's birth, they lost her elder brother, Johan, who drowned.)[4] Shortly after Emma's death, Inga's parents were again expecting. But tragedy struck the family again. While giving birth, Inga's 35 year-old mother died, 8 Nov 1857,[5] and Inga's seventh sibling came into the world, nameless and stillborn.[6]

About a year later, Inga's 33 year-old father married Magdalena Petersdotter, 31 Dec 1858.[7] Together, they had one child, a son, Anders, 25 Aug 1861, but he died at age seven months.[8] Later in 1861, when Inga was seven, her fourteen year-old sister, Josephina, left home, bound for somewhere in Sweden's former Älvsborg county.[9] Josephina returned home from there in 1862.[9] When Inga was eight, her brother, Mårten, left home, permanently, 12 Mar 1863, bound for Berghem parish, in Älvsborg county.[10] About a month later, Josephine left home again, moving to Öxabäck parish, in Älvsborg county.[9] She returned home a couple of months later, but then moved away permanently, to the City of Jönköping, 15 Oct 1863.[9] Josephina, unmarried, had a daughter in 1866.[9]

In 1866, when Inga was twelve, her sixteen year-old sister, Maria, left their father's farm in Trehörnahult, bound for Svartrå parish in Hallands county.[11] When Inga was thirteen, her eighteen year-old brother, Mårten, died of a lung ailment, 18 Jan 1868, in Berghem parish, Älvsborg county.[10] Later that year, Maria returned home.[11] In 1870, Inga's sister, Josephina, emigrated to the United States, but, inexplicably, without her daugher, who was only four at the time.[9] When Inga was nineteen, her 23 year-old sister, Maria, left home, permanently, 14 Nov 1873, bound for someplace called "Tyskland," perhaps in Germany.[11] (Later, in 1883, Maria emigrated to the United States, where she married and had one child, a daughter.)[11]

Marriage, Children

Inga continued to live with her father and stepmother on the soldier's farm in Trehörnahult until she was twenty-three.[12] She then married, in Villstad parish, 22 Apr 1878, a farmhand named Mårten Linus Carlsson (later Svärd), who resided in a place in the parish called Björket.[13] Inga and her husband, Mårten, initially settled in Björket,[14] and they ultimately had ten children. Their first, a daughter, Esther, was born in Björket, 6 Sep 1878.[15] They and their daughter continued to reside in Björket, with Mårten's brother, Anders, until 5 Nov 1878.[14]

Mårten became a soldier, and, 5 Nov 1878, he, Inga and Esther moved to the soldier's farm in Trehörnahult where Inga had been raised, taking over from her father and stepmother,[16] who moved to a nearby place called Vipperhult.[17] Mårten and Inga remained on the soldier's farm until 1902, where they had nine more children.[18] Before any of those children came to be, however, they lost their first-born, Esther, who died of scarlet fever, 4 May 1879, age seven months.[15] About a year after her death, they had another daughter, whom they also named Esther, 27 Apr 1880.[19] Mårten then lost his 58 year-old father to lung disease, in Södra Uvekull, 4 Jul 1880.[20] He and Inga then had, on the soldier's farm, a son, Emil, 24 Jan 1882,[21] a son Viktor, 7 Aug 1884,[22] a son, Oscar, 12 Oct 1886,[23] a son, Mårten, 20 Oct 1888,[24] and a son, Axel, 26 Dec 1890.[25] Three days after Axel was born, Inga's father died in nearby Vipperhult, at age 65.[26] A couple years later, Mårten and Inga had another daughter, Julia, 30 Jun 1893.[27] A bit more than two years after that, their daughter, Esther, age 15, left home permanently, 17 Sep 1895, bound for the United States.[28]

After Esther left, Mårten and Inga had the last two of their ten children: a son, Arthur, 21 Apr 1896,[29] and a son, Georg, 27 Jun 1898.[30] At the time of Arthur's birth, Inga was 43 years old. Mårten was 42.

Final Years in Käringbacka

Svärd Farm in Käringbacka
Käringbacka[31]
In 1902, Mårten's widowed mother, and his sister, Anna, moved to the soldier's farm in Trehörnahult,[32] and Mårten and Inga (and their living children, other than Esther) moved about half a mile south, to a farm called Käringebacka, where they'd remain for the remainder of their lives.[33] Their son, Oskar, left their home in Käringebacka, moving to Burseryd parish, 22 Oct 1904, but he returned home two years later, 28 Dec 1906.[23] Oscar then left home permanently, bound for the United States, 10 Apr 1909.[23] A few months later, their son, Victor, left home, too, also bound for the United States, 12 Jul 1909.[22] Mårten lost his mother (who continued at the time to reside on the nearby soldier's farm in Trehörnahult, where Inga had been raised and where she and Mårten had long lived), 4 Feb 1910, at age 86.[34] About five years later, their son, Emil, moved away, 7 Apr 1915,[21] and, four years after that, their son, Mårten, by then a sargeant in the Swedish armed forces, moved out, too, 1 Mar 1919.[24]

Mårten and Inga in Käringbacka
Mårten and Inga remained on the farm in Käringebacka with their four youngest children, Axel, Julia, Arthur and Georg, until 1922.[35] Mårten died there of arteriosclerosis and pulmonary emphysema, 2 Apr 1922, at age 66, and he was buried in Villstad Kyrkogården Cemetery.[36] About five months later, Inga died in Käringebacka of pancreatic cancer, 24 Sep 1922, at age 67.[37] Inga was buried in Villstad Cemetery ("Kyrkogården"), #1430, 1 Oct 1922.[37] She was survived by nine of her ten children, in death order: Julia (who died in Karlskronas Stadsförsamlingen Parish, Blekinge County, Sweden, in 1929, at age 36),[27] Victor (who died in the United States, in Cook County, Illinois, in 1954, at age 70),[22] Axel (who died in Villstad in 1956, at age 65),[25] Emil (who died in Jönköping in 1965, at age 83),[21] Oscar (who died in the United States, in Fairfield, Iowa, in 1968, at age 83),[23] Arthur (who died in the United States, in Cook County, Illinois, in 1970, at age 74),[29] Esther (who died in the United States, in Skokie, Illinois, in 1971, about age 91),[19] Mårten (who died in Villstad in 1972, at age 83),[24] and Georg (who died in the old family home in Käringebacka in 1983, at age 84).[30]
