Biography

Richard was the 6th and last child of Richard Passmore a chandler (someone that makes and sells candles, as well as groceries) and his wife Mary Williams. Richard was a beneficiary from his uncle Robert Passmores will proved in 1827. The condition was after his father Richard’s decease, Richard’s son Richard to have £15, his other three children to have £25. Nephew Richard, son of Richard to have £10 to be placed out at interest for his benefit to put him to a trade when he reaches 14 years, or 7 years if his father thinks proper; any surplus to be applied to clothes for him during his apprenticeship. This was how he became a shoemaker. He appears on the 1841 census for North Molton, age 25, living at Bridge Street in the village, with his wife Sarah and 2 children. His occupation was a cordwainer (a shoemaker). He next appears on the 1851 census for North Molton, age 38, with his wife and children in the hamlet of Maynes part of Squashes in the parish. His occupation was a shoemaker. He was named as a beneficiary in the will of his uncle William Williams, proved in 1855. He received the sum of 19 pounds. Richard next appears on the 1861 census for North Molton, age 48, with his wife and children, a shoemaker. His address this time was in High Bullen another hamlet in the parish of North Molton. He last appears on the 1871 census for North Molton, age 58, living in Maynes again, with his wife, and only 3 of his children living with him. He was still a shoemaker. Richard died on the 18th April 1872 aged only 59. Cause of death on the death certificate was hepatic disease 18 months, certified. Joan Crang reported the death, a friend of the family.
