Biography

Frances Needles, the daughter of William and Dorothy (née unknown) Needles, was born in Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Colony of Virginia on 19 Mar 1690/91 as listed in the Christ Church Parish Register.[1] She was NOT the daughter of John and Elizabeth Man Needles. While many genealogies show "Frances Mann Needles Hill" as the child of John and Elizabeth Man Needles, there is no record of a "Frances" as the daughter of Elizabeth Man and John Needles (and the births of all of their other children are pretty carefully documented).

The confusion may come from the fact that Dorothy (Frances' mother) was married to John Man before her marriage to William Needles, and they had two sons (Frances's half-brothers, both of whom are, of course, named "Man"). So she may have picked up the "Man/Mann" middle name by association. (See profile of mother Dorothy for more information on her three marriages and her children.)

On 7 Sep 1710, Frances married William Hill,[2] the son of Thomas and Ann (née unknown) Hill of Christ Church Parish.[3] They had nine children who's births are recorded in the Parish Register as follows:

  1. Thomas Son of Wm & Frances Hill born May ye 20 1711. (p. 86); died young.
  2. William Son of William & Frances Hill born Novemr ye 7 1712 (p. 88)
  3. Richard Son of William & Frances Hill born Janyry 15 baptized Janry ye 22 1714 (p. 89); Richard Hill dyed Janry ye 22 1731. (p. 186)
  4. Russell Son of William & Frances Hill born Febry ye 23. 1716 baptized Ap. 21. 1717. (p. 96); m. 11 Apr 1738, Anne Towles (p. 170)
  5. Judith daughter of William & Frances Hill born June ye 2d baptized June ye 28. 1719 (p. 103); m. 22 Jan 1738 William Boughtoun [Booten] (p. 170)
  6. Thomas Son of William & Frances Hill born June ye 17. baptized July ye15 1722 (p. 110)
  7. Needles Son of William & Frances Hill born August ye 12 baptized Septemr ye 19. 1725. (p. 118)
  8. Frances daughter of William & Frances Hill born Janry ye 26. baptized March ye 10. 1727. (p. 123)
  9. Anna daughter of William & Frances Hill born July 25. baptized August 30. 1730. (p. 129)

In 1719, Frances' father, William Needles was deceased and her sister, Mary (Needles) Hutcheson made an indenture on the 6th and 7th of April that year which sold to Henry Gilpin "all that parcel of land bequeathed to sd William Needles by John Needles his Father by his last Will and Testmt. Dated the six and twentieth day of May 1686 and which is now decended unto said Mary Hutcheson and Frances the wife of one William Hill of the sd County [Middlesex] the only Surviveing Daughters and Coheires of sd William Needles."[4] This indenture was witnessed by William Johnson and Thomas Edwards, and was acknowledged in court by Mary Hutcheson on 7 Apr 1719 and entered into record.

The date and location of Frances' death are unknown. There are two hypotheses floating around the internet. One is that Frances died after 1750 in North Carolina. The other gives a DOD of 22 Sep 1734 in Christ Church Parish. Neither of these have any supporting evidence. Neither France or William's deaths were found in the Parish Register of Christ Church. All that can be stated is that Frances died sometime after the birth of her daughter Anna in 1730.

Frances was born in 1690.[5]She has a record of her birth in Christchurch, Middlesex, Virginia in 1690.[6] She passed away in about 1743.
